PureWight.org - Pure Wight Photography

Hey
Myself and a guy called Josh Harris have just opened PureWight.org.
We're an Isle of Wight based photography company.
Feel free to check out our portfolio, it doesn't get updated as reguarly as our Flickr so it may be best to check that out instead...

Our competitor, BrightWightImages seems to be getting jealous too.
Mr. or whatever it is Toogood lost himself an event when he emailed the managers after finding that we were covering the same event. His jealousy lost him the event, and we still have it. Hahah.
In regards to the template being the same as his, it was paid for and used by Josh and Darren kept it, some of Josh's images can still be viewed on Darren's server and his name in the HTML code of his site, which has been reported to his hosts. :)
He seems to like childish games, saying our images are crap, etc. To make himself feel better about his photography and he can't seem to handle that we're already covering more events than him.
I'm also in contact with at least 15 local photographers, some very well respected that seem to like my photography...
All of the photography that's on there currently has been taken by me, as Josh hasn't been online.
We've also had T-Shirts printed with our company and website on the back. Black T-Shirts and white text.
We're looking to buy some jackets and polos too, for when the colder weather comes.
Anyway...
Feel free to comment and give us tips and advice. We'd love to hear what you think. :)
Oh, I forgot to mention! We've also been offered the chance to use a studio on the island and they'll lend us all the equipment needed!
Basically, our aim is to prove that you can take decent photographs with ANY camera.
I currently have a Fujifilm Finepix S9600, and am planning to upgrade in the near future.
So, yeah, as I said. Any criticism is welcome. Tips and advice would be great.

You can take decent photographs with any camera.. but that doesn't mean that is what people are looking for, or what is going to be wanted.

If you took a picture for a magazine, who needed a high-res quality up close photograph of a model, with superior lighting, just any camera isn't going to do that.

I mean, seriously lol you couldn't think of anything better? I could take better pics on a Boots disposable camera. You can get buy one get one free on those cameras right now too! :D

You can take decent photographs with any camera.. but that doesn't mean that is what people are looking for, or what is going to be wanted.

If I went out and got a disposable camera, broke out the lens with a knife, and tried to take pictures.. the best I can.. you think that would be good?

Been offered free advertising in return for the company to use some of my images.

Here is my two pence:

John Williams is jealous of my business, Bright Wight Images. He is now in partnership with Josh Harris, the guy who gave out my FTP details to John (who put pron onto the site). They are following me around events (fair do's, free world) however also contacting local photographers, trying to turn the attention away from Bright Wight Images (stealing my business).

As you can see, the name is very similar to mine, and I expect my name has played a role within the creation of their name. The sites are the same, because the site is a free script. I have had an offer from a local photographer/web developer, who is going to make me a new website based on the current one, however in HTML. This will allow me to interact with my visitors a little more and provide more information.

One argument that myself and Pure Wight Photography keep having, is about the quality of the images. According to John Williams, I am infact 'jealous' - I do not see how I am jealous, of the low quality images which Pure Wight Photography display. I do believe that John Williams is getting jealously and pitty mixed up. I do infact feel sorry for PWP, because when they turn up for events, the clients will not take them seriously as 'official photographers' with the point and shoot camera they have. It angers me a lot, that they believe they can steal my clients with this sort of quality image:

Do not get me wrong - point and shoot cameras can be great, however the images you display are not. I have to be direct here, in saying that the images displayed, are infact poor quality. I have seen a few more people post in this thread the same thing, however John Williams can not see this.

PWP are displaying a very jealous behaviour towards Bright Wight Images, however BWI will continue with the planned events, and will not let a little 'competition' (if I can call it that?) get in the way. It is also clear that PWP are jealous, by posting to the same selected group of people, and referring to myself and BWI within that post. Such jealously continues, by getting t-shirts printed with their 'business' name. This is continuing from an idea I had already developed and discussed. I hope you can all see my point of view on this matter. I have spoken to a lot of local photographers, who do agree with me, and will be supporting me through this time. I have also discussed the matter with world class photographers, who I have been working with for the past 3 days, who suggest that I do not worry about PWP, as they display no competition towards me, in terms of quality.

In response to the above post, please could you confirm this local 'company' which will use your images. If it is the Society for the Blind, then you have a winner there!

I do not need to feel better about my photography, by putting your photography down. I have had wonderful feedback, and I am happy with the progress I am making. You are infact not covering more events, however covering one event I can not cover - Bestival 2008. This is only because your family own the land, not because of the quality of your photography or your reputation.

Well, PWP want nothing to do with BWI.
Yes, we're covering some of the same events, hmm, maybe that's because we live on a small island?
& Yes, I've been contacting local photographers, what's your problem with that? Why would that bother you so much?
Yes, I have a Fujifilm Finepix S9600, which I use in Manual mode so that is not a "point and shoot" as you call it.
We're covering such events as Bestival, Isle of Wight Festival, we have also been given free all-access pass's to... Carisbrooke Castle and Ventnor Botanic Gardens to support our photography.
A large local site contacted me and offered to trade advertising space on their website, in return for the use of our images.
Yes, we've only just started and "crap" images are to be expected, but the minority that are decent quality, can be used.
I don't personally have anything against BWI, I'm not jealous in any way, I know what Darren's social life is like and wouldn't like that as my own, yet he seems to think we do.
I told him about this offer we had about the advertising...

That's how pathetic he is...
He finds us "competition" otherwise he would have no need to email them.
That's how he lost the Steam Show event, for being pathetic.
To be honest, yes, we're just starting and this is my first camera, Darren started with a camera 2 models below mine and had **** images, gained the knowledge and upgraded.
Therefore, having more experience, his images will be better in some areas.
I don't deny that some of my images, are ****. But the minority that are not, I am getting good comments on.
Photographs taken by Josh Harris have also not yet been uploaded.
The T-shirts have gained us popularity already, and we are currently in talks with the Isle of Wight Gazette, that want an article written on PWP.
All in all, I don't care what anyone on this forum thinks...
Darren's not qualified, he's not selling any of his images, etc.
Maybe if we were older and Darren was qualified or such, it would be a more serious matter. But at this time, we're only currently doing it for experience, not to make money, not for any other reasons...
I don't see Darren's problem with PWP.
He used to be fine, used to compliment some of my images when I first started on my own, but as soon as he saw us as a threat, changed his attitude.
Anyway, that's all I have to say on the subject really...
You all have your own opinions, but, none of you seem to realise that I've only just started, I haven't been given the opportunities that darren has had nor the experience, which is the only reason I'm doing this.
I don't see how I culd be classed as "competition" against him, we're not competing for anything, I just enjoy doing it as a hobby.

Maybe if Darren was more mature about this, he could help us and we could help him. We have the events etc sorted and he has the experience, we could get him some large events as he well knows yet doesn't seem to see it that way.

You make it sound like you have been offered these positions. You have only gained the Bestival, due to your family owning the land (not due to his photography). You will not have had the Isle of Wigh Festival confirmed, as it isn't for another year AND, its a professional event. Ventnor Botanic Gardens if free entry - so how have you gained passes?

I have just tried to phone the Isle of Wight Gazette to confirm what John is saying, however they have gone home for the weekend. I will phone Monday morning to confirm what they are saying. I expect this is through Josh Harris, who says he is a freelance photographer for the gazette - I have yet to see any of his images.

It just frustrates me that nobody will see it from my point of view...

I do indeed photoshop my images, if I just need to bring out the colour - however the image is still there. I have still taken the image with the correct settings, just maybe the lighting is bad.

For example: I was out on the water, a rubbish day and no sun - I bought the colour saturation out a little bit, gives it a little more 'umph'

Your point of view seems to bad mouth Darren as if he's snapped your camera in half..
Why don't you run a business that doesn't critisize others... Its unlikely someone on this forum will book you for a giant Gala event, you should work to your own standards, healthy competition is ok, but this is just too far..

Just to clear it up, I've passed 6ft now.. I do not play Habbo, and I got into the house just 10 minutes ago after a trip to Asda..

I'm over 6 foot too, I spend most of my time out with my mates, or my girlfriend that Mr. Toogood likes to perv on. & Her little sister, but I don't think I should bring this into it.

It's honestly nothing against BWI, it's just the things that he's said on Msn, to me, that nobody knows about then people criticise me for trying... Angers me.
I don't wish to be in competition with him, or anything of such, his attitude has just suddenly changed since he saw us as a threat.

If you do not want to be competition, do not try and steal clients that I have setup for weeks?

If you want to cover the event, be a member of the public.

5 of our images were given as samples to the event holders, they then stated that they liked our photography and that we could cover the event.
You lost yourself the event by a pathetic error.
