First Marmite now ketchup

“He can live without it and the healthy meals at the school are fantastic, but this seems one step too far as they only used to have it once a week on a burger anyway. Now he says the burger is really dry.
“Tomato ketchup contains lycopene, which is good for you, but they say it’s got a high level of salt and sugar.
“While it’s not something you complain about, it seems a bit daft.”
Vale of Glamorgan Council leader Gordon Kemp said: “The policy is not to use mass-produced foods, we produce everything fresh on the premises.
“It’s all part of the healthy eating programme and I think our council is one of the leading authorities in Wales in this respect.”
Mary Hesford, business manager for Vale Catering Services which provides the primary schools’ menu, said they follow guidelines from the Welsh Assembly Government.
She said: “Children can have a tomato sauce but now it’s one our cooks make themselves. By using home-made sauce we can control what nutrients are in there.
“Ketchup bought in bottles can have high levels of salt and sugar that could be damaging for the children.”
A Welsh Assembly Government spokeswoman said: “We do not tell local authorities not to serve ketchup in schools. Our guidance on school lunches is not that prescriptive.
“It is for local authorities to ensure that their school meals are as balanced and healthy as possible.”

They're too bothered about people ending up fat, they should be glad it keeps the population down.

This has to be some sort of human rights infringment? :P Not letting kids eat what they want is well harsh.

They banned Marmite?! That's incredibly healthy :S It's the first thing you should take when you feel a cold coming on or indeed, have a cold.

Not sure about Ketchup, although I am very certain you won't get "unhealthy" from eating a squirt of it. You'll have to drink a whole barrel to feel the bad effects

It's a good source of Vitamin B. NOt sure why they banned that when it I can't see anything bad about it :/ Unless the traces off at are something to be concerned about, but you'll need to eat 500 jars of pure marmite to get any effects of fat from from Marmite :/

Ketchup on the other hand is bad for you, but again, you'll have to loads of bottles of pure tomato ketchup to get any serious problems from it, and if I remember correctly, schools don't let children play with huge bottles of the stuff :/ Kids need sugar, otherwise they have no energy to do anything. What is wrong with health critics these days?!

They removed FREE ketchup from our school years ago, now they charge us like 15p per sachet. It was cause people just opened them then threw them @ people. Still I don't think I'd be to upset over the loss of 15p.

It hasn't been banned, the school just have to make their own and not buy it from other places.

I remember when they stopped giving salt and vinegar at our school.
Hardly anyone got chips... they must have lost loads of money.

Good thing I don't eat school meals and next year I get to go out for lunch anyway, no big deal. I can always bring a sandwich in my bag if I get hungry. ;)

A school near me has put a 2 sugar limit on cups of tea.

Oyes Guernsey isn't affected (A)! We still have it ;)!

Our school doesn't sell anything unhealthy (apart from burgers etc for dinner) but 90% of my school go to chippy for lunch so

Having more than two sugars in a tea is just weird. In a coffee it's understandable (though I only take one or two, if any at all), but two in tea is more than enough. Heck, you can taste the sugar after one!
