The High Street in a town near me is beginning to become empty. Woolworths is gone and the M&S Simply Food next door to that might be leaving soon.

M&S is keeping 25 food stores open, and 2 smaller stores open nationwide I THINK. Its just what I heard from my mate who lost his job at M&S, his store got shut down. :P
Next, New Look &... Debenhams I think, are the only companies whose statistics for Like-for-Like profit have increased (in comparison with last years christmas shopping). *dances*
Yeah you're right actually, I just googled Next Like for like profits and they're down 7%... I swear my Store manager told me Next were up LOL. Oh dear. Primark are up because it's Primark yaknow, uhm.. yes.

*Dance* LOL I'm such a bragger. It sounds more like Debenhams and Next took a hammering than anything... I musn't have heard him right. :< Primark are up 4% in like-for-like sales. River Island haven't published any Matty, whassup widdat?!
I think Matalan are next to go.

That article is from 2005, so you can imagine the state they might be in now. ¬_¬ USC are closing down pretty soon, and so are Zavvi by the looks of things. I think Cult...

is one big shocker if you ask me. Next year they won't be rolling in it, oh mark my words.
Btw Matty, thats bad budgeting by Head office. They don't need to cut back on staff, all they need to do is shrink the hours of others. Where I work, I'm one of 5 people who works all day Saturday and all day Sunday, everyone else gets 4 hours. I'm expecting my hours to be cut soon, even though we still have money left in the kitty that we're spending on our staff room LOL.
Give it a year or two, and hardly any retail stores will be left.
I edited my post, and yeah you're right there I think most companies will go to the wall or migrate to the internet. The UK large shopping centres will be the only places to shop, and small malls will become housing estates. Thats how I see it.
Our hours got cut to 4 hour shifts manly, however it made no difference really.
We was meant to have 3 staff on Womens Wear, 3 On Childrens and two on mens, it is now mainly 2 on ladies, one or two if your lucky on childrens and one on mens.
Made no difference, simply bad headoffice planning really. But hey, what can we do about it.
Yeah, i see the internet being the focus for shopping soon.
We have 2 massive Next's in Exeter, they could shut down one of them and I don't think they'd notice as one of them is central, and one of them is way out of the way, where all the small businesses are. How big is your store, because that is not alot of staff in one store...
Head Offices suck don't they? Hehe, they'll probably reading us talking now :D
Why the hell are they cutting back opening & closing times? The amount of rent they pay will be the same, the amount of money they earn will be less. Do they think they'll save more money on cutting back 1 hour? That really is bad planning by head office. :S
It was sorta expected the whole laying off of staff, everyones gonna start doing it eventually. Does your store have day targets and Next card targets?
Wow, I looked at my store report on Saturday (week ends on Sat, starts on Sun) and we had gone over our weekly target by about 3k, and that didn't even count what we had earned on the day. O_o
Yeah they're not saving nay money on staff... except an hour perhaps, but some staff are bound to stay a bit longer, our work just flings out hours on-the-spot depending on how much needs to be done lolol. It's well funny, I just decided on Sunday that I felt like earning an extra 30 quid... you know, because I can!
Stuff like this actually happened in Primark though tbh, we had to get our hours tightened and they wern't giving out much overtime (they used to give out LOADS), because they had to meet their budget...
ah well im just looking forward to staying in bed
Seriously? :O We've been in the plus all the time... wow, I doubt Debenhams are doing much better though are they hehe. I'd be worried for all the big names like Wallis and Jane Norman. I heard from an employee at Karen Millen that they've been told their company is going to go under Administration soon, but they're not plastering the windows with Sale banners because they reckon themselves as 'too posh for that'.
Jane Norman will be next, then Reiss, then Moss Bros. I could bet on this stuff LOL.
