GB Olympic Football Team.

A deal is imminent, what a surprise! it's gonna' be us English representing the rest of GB! just like normal though really, eh?

How are the Scottish and Welsh going to be feeling about this? (not like any of their players would make the team anyway but you know.)

Will you b supporting the GB football team?

EDIT: Also yes I will be supporting them as, as much as I am proud to be English, I am also just as proud to be British, believe it or not. :)

I'm not proud to be British; much like the Scottish aren't because they want independence. Northern Ireland are alright and Wales can be alright but the Scottish are ***** when it comes to things like this.

I thought we couldn't have a team anyway because we have to have a GB team registered with FIFA if so?

Fifa are going to allow it, they were going to allow it with ALL GB players, but Scotland and Wales wouldn't agree to letting their players being included in the team. So it's gonna' be an all English GB team.

What Scottish and Welsh players would get in anyway? I see a place, maybe, for Craig Gordon - that's all.

Don't all the football teams in the Olympics have to have like 3 players over 24 in the starting team? and the rest have to be under 24? or something stupid like that.

I'm English first and fall-most, but I am also British, and so is MOST of this forum. That is not an opinion, that is a FACT, although somewhere along in this discussion someone will disagree with me.

Under 23's with 3 over-age players - I think.

In technicality, we're all British. But I class myself as English. If there's a form I need to fill in and it asks ethnicity - there's always a box saying White British but I put a tick in other and fill in 'White English'. I'm proud to be English, not British.

I count myself as from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and not the non-existant states such as the Kingdom of England, Kingdom of Scotland and Kingdom of Wales all of which haven't existed since the 1800's. I don't see why we should let scottish nationalists ruin the United Kingdom which was the first global power in the world, and created the modern world with its Empire which spanned the globe.

I will be supporting them of course, still doesn't change my mind over the Olympics as I consider them a total waste of money. I'd rather see the British Flag than any English, Welsh, Irish or Scottish flag, thats for sure. :)

Right now, this topic was brought up by myself a while ago and for it I was slated. In it I stated that this team GB would affect our status as single countries but, at the time, Mr Blatter said that it wouldn't. And what has he said now - "It will". We've played as single countries since now and why the hell shouldn't we continue.

Can I ask why you do not support the Olympics? I agree that it costs a lot of money, but it will rejuvenate the west end/east end (can't remember where it's located now, lol@me) - it has created 10's of 1000's of jobs, and nothing will make me (and I'm sure the rest of the GB) more proud to be British than seeing a state of the art, world class Olympic village and facilities, and showing off our dominance of the sporting world and also showing off our wealth and love for sport. (**** America.) More so nothing would make me more proud to see out great sporting athletes of all sports and backgrounds, being crowned Olympic champions in their respected sports, in the world class sporting facilities that we are going to be providing, and nothing will make me more proud than seeing our winning athletes, draped in the union jack, to the sounds of our national anthem, all in BRITAIN.

I cannot wait for the Olympics, gonna be awesome.

BTW Garient, if you'd seen the BBC news article, it has to be all ENGLISH as your nation (and Scotland ect) would be compromised if Mr. ******** Blatter wanted us all to play as team GB. I advise you read the article lol, I agree some Welsh talent would be in the team, if your nations were allowed to take part in the GB team, but your not.

football shouldn't even be in the Olympics.

That's a different debate all together really. If that's the case also, there shouldn't be a confederations cup?

If you ask any Scottish person whether they're British; they'll say they're Scottish, not British. It's arrogance. I share that feeling to be honest though. Great Britian isn't a country so how can we be that nationality? I don't own a British flag - I own an English flag. I am from England.

why not? the confederations cup is for the winners of European Championships, African Cup of Nations etc.

There's no contract that says that the teams permanently has to sign. England wants to have an independant footballing body just as much as another other British country.

@Browney, possibly players like Jonjo Shelvey, John Bostock etc

I thought Sepp Blatter was quoted not long ago saying that a GB team would be ok for a one off occasion?

I won't be supporting team GB either way.

Football has it's own major sport federations. Why do we need to play football in the Olympics?

Leave it as the world cup etc.

How can I put this in a simple way.

• These jobs that are being created will not be sustainable jobs and will not exist after the Olympics are held.
• The stadium is no use to the vast majority of the people in this country.
• The Olympics don't interest a lot of people at all in this country.
• The taxpayers of this country don't want their money wasted on a tacky event which lasts for around two weeks.
• The amount of money being used is not justifiable to spend on a sporting event.
• This country is in debt and doesn't need more debt.
• The budget has gone overboard, what was promised to be a budget of around one or two billion has gone to 12 billion and will not doubt go higher, not including the costs of security surrounding the games.
• The stadium after use will not be used, and don't pretend it will be. Just take a look at Athens and the countless other games which are now falling down.
• At a cost of around twelve billion these Olympics are costing more than half the cost of a new Trident system which I, and anyone with any common sense realise is far more important than a two week sporting event.
• The chances of a terrorist attack occuring around the time of the game is vastly higher and will most likely occur.

Your promoting this as some multi-cultural event which will see us at the top of the world, when most people don't actually care about the Olympics. Your apparent hate towards America has nothing to do with the games, or perhaps it has, maybe your jealous of America winning so much all the time - if that is the case then what kind of 'Olympic spirit' is that?

If the government want to promote sporting then why don't they invest in new swimming pools and facilities in schools, that will reach a heck of a lot more people rather than a small minority of people in East London, London, the capital of this country which already has a oversized budget compared to the rest of the country.

I have a good idea, how about all the people who actually want the Olympics can pay for it themselves, along with this Labour government who seem very keen to spend our money on their useless and waste-of-time projects.

When we haven't got people dying on the NHS because their local trust can't afford certain drugs to lengthen their livespan, then and only then maybe i'd consider spending money on tatty, two week games.

Great Britain isn't a country and neither is England. The Kingdom of England as stated above, does no longer exist. You have never lived in a state called England - technically, as that state and the Kingdom of Scotland and so on all combined in the 1880's and before, to form Great Britain and later on the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and then when Irish independance was granted the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I'm proud to be British and English, and I won't let some scottish nationalists ruin this great nation, which built the world as we know it.

Ramsey would, probably alot more from Wales aswell (considerring the Olympics is in 2012, and most our national side are about 19/20)

Oops it's me:P I don't understand the Welsh and Scot's attitude on this at all. The Lions Rugby Union team are from all the home rugby nations and it has never effected the individual rugby side from the different nations so why should it effect the home nation football teams. They have really missed an opportunity I feel to raise the game's profile, particuarly in Wales where Rugby is King.

I am english but have lived in Wales a long time and I do see myself as British.

This was a footballing debate. Not a politics debate, I really do hope you grow up to be a politician... you really do have the knowledge to be involved in it.

TBH, some of your post is flawed, but due to the vast size of it I really cannot be bothered picking out all the flawed comments.

Although you have vast politics knowledge, you really haven't got a fiddle when it comes to talking about sports? The Olympics, the biggest sports event in the world, if not the biggest event of any kind in the world? which is actually a 3-4 week event, this waste-of-time project is going to earn our country billions of profit on top of what we have already spent funding the Olympic games (£7BN), and you think all of this isn't going to benefit our country, just because it's held in our capital? please could you really see it being held in our second City, Birmingham? give it a break.

That's the only flaw I can be bothered to pick out as the rest is truly an essay.

It is indeed a sporting debate, however due to the closeness of politics and football in this case, considering you asked me why I don't support the Olympics then there was your answer. :)

The only flawed part I have just spotted myself, the fact I didn't mention Great Britain as a Kingdom which it was. To say something is majorly flawed and not mention why, means your side is even more flawed.

As for you stating the games will give us a profit, please provide evidence of past games profit outweighing their original cost, so that the host country made a profit.

because there's about 20 different unions in rugby and there's around 200 football associations. There's pressure coming in from other countries - African countries and FIFA's vice-president Jack Warner. The FAW want to preserve their youngsters status. Yes, maybe they are ruining some players chances of playing at the Olympics but in doing so, they're saving a load of others if team GB becomes permanent.

Do you support England?

I do believe some team (West Ham, I think) is trying to get permission to use the stadium afterwards, but I still agree with Dan about how unessicary they are for us, and no way in hell will 'we' make a profit from 2012.
