In before the poll.
In seriousness, I don't know. How do you define class? Parents occupation? Education? Wealth? Quality of life? Residence? It's an unanswered question as far as I'm concerned. Tell me what you mean by "class" and I'll tell you what "class" I am :)
people call most people in kenilworth s**** and stuff and people in kenilworth call people on my road s****.
so i suppose im classed as upper class snob?
no way, upper class are very wealthy and usually hold important roles. i'd be working class.
upper middle class i guess
Middle class ? as im not poor but im not super rich but like we have a nice house and nice stuff in it? and i have a rly nice cat so imma say middle
It depends on your parents wealth mostly, in particular the size of your house and where it's located. Other factors could be having a very good car, what qualifications your parents have, what your parents jobs are, how much they earn, medical insurance or being privately educated.
You can't properly define either of the three classes but it's usually quite easy to see which one you fall under.
um i'd say middle.
working class.
Well I'm not sure, my step-mum and my Dad both came from very working class families. One in Essex and one in Glasgow and have stuck with those fundamental working class ideals throughout their life. They've worked hard and both hold professional teaching roles. However, at the beginning of my life I lived in a council house and there wasn't any money etc. Although that was when my parents were together and my mum was a house wife and my Dad just earnt enough to pay the bills let alone raise 3 children.
Now though, as us 5 have got older (2 step and 2 real sisters) they've been able to excel and have been the subject of numerous promotions. Managed to buy a 6 bedroom house, have 2 reasonable family cars and got me and my step-sister our own car earlier this year. So I would guess I'm middle class now.
Indeed it seems so. Some people reckon that it's impossible to change your social class because of things such as values so that's why I've limited the poll to your upbringing rather than what you currently are. For example John Prescott is adamant he's still working class despite now being a millionaire because he's kept the same values and morales.
Edit: Indicators of working class would be whether the council own house/flat you live in, do the government offer you much support in terms of benefits, whether parents are living by themselves, are their wages around the minimum wage and do you need qualifications to do the jobs.
No but it's a little rented terrace house. but it's close to everything we need to it's a good place for us. but then when i was little and lived with my mum and dad it was a council house but then we bought it and then they split up like a month after. tbh i'd say my dad was 'better off' than us and he lives on his own, but in the house we'd bought so doesn't have to pay the rent. My mum and stepdad earn more than 30k a year because I don't get EMA but it was only just over, and that was because my stepdad got a promotion for a year. and my mum got pregnant when she was 16 so didn't do college so she doesn't really have many qualifications, but i think she did do some night school thing after to get some. but now she can do courses at work anyway to earn some and her work pays for them anyway :P
oops i didn't think i'd wrote that much
that's exactly same as me jake, except i get full ema because it's only my mum who has an income in the family. my mum had decent pay and my dad had and still has a very generous wage so we were well off at the begining and they both put together their money and bought the house i'm living it atm. but after he left and the hospital mum worked at closed we kinda struggled for money a bit so now she works 2 jobs + takes any others she can so i'd say we're working class even though she has decent qualifications and we have our own house..
at school so many people reckon they're upper/upper middle class. i don't think anyone really knows the true meaning of it :S
You're probably like Immenseman then but it's difficult to tell, either way it's pretty borderline. Most likely you've gone from working class to middle class.
I see what you mean, some people just don't understand the social classes at all but at the end of the day they're pretty meaningless and classes aren't quite what they used to be. Working class used to be far worse for example and middle class used to be more difficult to achieve. And values used to play a much bigger part although today, I think society generally has the same morales.
Haha.
Well here goes
When my parents were together we were upper class
5 bedroom house in a very well respected area, Dad earning £80k & mum was a housewife.
When my mum & dad split my mums new husband wasn't as well off and we were probably middle class
Now mum's on her own we're working class :P
Haha :)
Isn't upper class royalty and maybe the very wealthy families with heirs etc and working class are labourers (farmers etc) while the majority of the UK are middle class?
Anyway I voted for the wrong one. http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs48/f/20...culasaurus.gif
Middle class.
Yeah something like that :P
It's weird though because my mum's family have been pretty middle/higher class with my grandad being a headteacher and gran being a teacher and they have a pretty nice house, new cars every year and whatnot. Whilst my dad's side is working class and my gran on that side lives in a council house with a pretty old car :P But now it seems to have swapped with my dad being more middle and my mum more working
Upper Middle Class I guess...
In a few years class will be a majort part of society again, cant wait  what with everyone 'needing' to have the latest this and that, you will soon start getting very clear divides, thus your class system well and truely back.
*Oh and working class :)
Working class, although my mum has two degrees.
Isn't class 'officially' described as your parents job? Even though there's loads of arguments about it, shouldn't we just stick to the official thing? :D
When you do sociology, you realise that class already does cause divides, alkaz. They just aren't as clear as they used to be...
Working class for me.
I live in an ex-council house (but it's nice, nothing like off crimewatch lmao ;)). The sterotype doesn't really apply here because of the area. My Mum has a very good job with the council she's had for 27 years (but it's just us in the house). I'm working class. (:
middle class i spose? i don't live in no states house :eusa_danc
Technically mid-upper class :P Because the class system has gotten so old and unreliable that it cannot take into account all factors like in the days of old :P
Saying that, the older generation on my dad's side were definitely upper class, no doubt about it - rich, lived in a huge house in Kent in a quiet but surprisingly quaint area and had huge jobs. My mum's side is working class, they worked on the fields. For some reason, the upper classness hasn't really rubbed off, but my dad never got on with his mum so it kinda dissolved. But there are a few odd things still in there. So mid-upper class is probably the better option (so neither on the poll).
Lol, but the upper-middle and certainly the upper class are almost always privately educated? So it's obvious they're lying unless you go to a public school :S
Aristocracy is upper class, people who inherit wealth and have titles like 'Duke and Duchess of wherever'. Apparently you can only be born into it. Kate Middleton is looked down on for being "too middle-class" for Prince Harry, despite living with her millionaire parents.
Working Middle Class, it was a mediocre life. Lol
From money and possesions etc. Working class.
From education and values middle class?
Oo, if wikipedia is correct, and that's debateable :P People are getting muddled up with the US class system! Upper Class for the UK are people born into it, with a title of nobility while the other titles look to be more about money and qualifications, though mainly focused on money from what can be perceived.
You don't have to be posh to be privileged!
About 20 years ago, my mum lived in a flat with 3 children. Very very poor then still are tbh.
Anyway 20 years on, now in a 3 bed room rented house, which is completely ****.
Housing Association is a complete joke, probably one of the worst in the UK. A lot of maintenance work needs to be done to the house and there is parts that after years of complaing about, is still isn't done. (This is what you have to put up with when you can't get out of a situation as bad as this)
Both of my brothers have their own house, (Paying mortgages) one of my brother's has a gf and she's paying half. Other brother is about to rent out his house and move back in with us.
Both working class, one is a Policeman and the other one is a Marketing sales manager. (Both struggle to pay Mortgages)
Mum works full time, no degrees, i don't think. Due to my Mum's bad upbring with her mum.
But ye, it would be nice to go out and buy what you like but i suppose life won't be like this for ever. If you want something, if you put your mind to it, you can achieve it.
I shouldn't be complaining anyway, i have a roof over my head, if i don't have enough food, at least I've had something.. compare to me and people in countries like Africa i'm like completely upper class. :L
Sorry for the longgggg life story.
I'm somewhere between working class and middle class. I don't get any ema at all but my mum & stepdads jobs are barely enough to pay the bills and buy the food, by the time it comes to anything like christmas or birthdays i get limited to about £50 unless I chip in myself. They've never had enough money to help me out financially (driving lessons, money for going out, pocket money when I was younger etc) but we've never been on benefits or anything, its some sort of horrible line where I can't really complain about being poor but we don't have any money :P
That said, before my parents split up we had a pretty big 4 bedroomed house that we bought when the housing market was at its lowest (it was about 50k I think!) and over the years they decorated it and made it really nice and it was worth about 200k when my dad eventually sold it after they split up. I grew up there and we easily had enough money for anything we wanted so I kind of still have that sort of middle class mindset and attiitudes (being well spoken, not drinking heavily all the time etc) so yeah, guess I'm living in the past a bit :P
my parents make a combined £100k+/yr. yet we don't have a massive house, but my dad does have a subaru. does that make me upper or middle.
oh my mum went to university, my dad couldn't however.
middle class i wud say
i don't really think anyone on the forum is upper class unless you're like royalty or random titles from your parents like duke/sir whatever else there is.
I know that, thats why I said, 100 years ago, even 50 years ago they were still there pretty strong, now the have kinda faded out but now the media and attention on money and labels is bringing that back strong and fast. It's easy to see, if you do sociology or not.
