This question has probAbly been asked millions of times, but I am curious to know why you smoke.
I don't need to know the general reasons why (cause it's cool, it makes me fit in etc..) just your reason why :)

I posted a thread on this a few months ago, my post there pretty much summed it up:
I for one am 18 which therefore makes me an adult who can legally buy and smoke cigarettes. Smoking is a habit that often starts in the teens and that would be why lots of people on this Forum smoke.
I'm not quite sure how you can consider it pathetic? It is my choice to smoke and I accept the risks that come with it - which is by no means pathetic. As a non-smoker you will of course not see the point, but to me it tastes nice, it has a calming affect (and don't say if I didn't smoke I wouldn't notice the difference, because one of the first times I smoked it was because I was stressed and I decided to try one and see how it would make me feel. It made me feel better.) and I enjoy it. I also consider smoking to be a social thing, I rarely smoke on my own and I have brilliant conversations with people I talk to in the smoking area at work. Not at all pointless to me?Quote:
I think it's really pathetic, I don't see the point.
I was having this discussion with my dad and my step-mum the other day at my grandad's local. We put forward a simple question: if you had smoking pubs and non-smoking pubs, which ones would be busier? The answer is obvious. The smoking pubs would be busier. I also know a massive number of non-smokers who would like smoking back in pubs, so it can't be hated that much. I do agree with non-smoking in restaurants however. I think anywhere that food is consumed on a regular basis (not just a bacon sandwich ordered over the bar or w/e) should be non-smoking.Quote:
I also hate it when smokers say 'oh we should be allowed to smoke inside restaurants, pubs etc.' because actually, no you shouldn't. Why should us healthy non-smokers have to put up with your vile stench when we want to enjoy a meal/a drink.
I think it's actually quite rude that you would make a comment like that. It's a generalisation that smokers don't care if other people breathe in their smoke. Especially children. I have four brothers and sisters. Two of them young. When my mum and me smoke we always go outside; whatever the weather and whatever the situation. It is the same when I go to my nan's. I have a number of younger cousins and if they are there, we always smoke outside. Admittedly, there will be some smokers who aren't quite as tactful when it comes to their smoking habits. But there are idiots everywhere in the world.Quote:
Most smokers are ignorant and don't care if other people (or children) have to put up with their second hand smoke and the disgusting stench of it.
Your dad must either be chain smoking or not ventilating the house well enough. Because I smoke with my partner's mum in her dining room and none of us ever have that problem. I only had the problem of my clothes stinking of **** when I used to stick up skittles at my local pub years ago. The league my team was in was full of old men who smoked cigars and that did cling to my clothes, but that was about ten of them smoking at the same time and I wash my clothes after I wear them once anyway so it was never a problem.Quote:
When I come back from my Dads my clothes stink of **** and everything just gets put in the wash (even if it's been washed before I come back).
I smoke when I drink because that minor headrush you get is amplified so much through alcohol (at least the volumes we go through) so as well as looking cool and having something to do it does genuinely feel good at that point. Not so much when sober
I don't agree with smoking but I agree that all pubs and restaurants should allow smokers. For one it's killing pubs.
I know social smoking while drinking my mates seem to do that a bit. I never liked the taste of cigarettes..
Cigarettes taste like asssssssssss omg :( I don't smoke, and I really don't see why people kill themselves by smoking.
I know u will live for 2 more seconds...
I don't like smokers in pubs, I go there for lunch sometimes because that's my "out for dinner", and would hate smelling **** while I eat.
It's fine how it is, just have a smokers room like at airports, heck u don't even have to light up just puff away
It's weird seeing people who just turned 18 smoking while driving, it's like ugh :-/
Stress causes more cancer than anything else. People in the south of France and across the mediterrannean live longer than we do despite drinking and smoking heavily being far more common, simply because they don't worry about everything the way we do
Yeah there is, pumping yourself full of gasoline is dangerous then and there. I know McDonalds isn't good for me but I eat it anyway, I wouldn't say going to a fast food outlet is tantamount to filling yourself up on petrol though
Smoking just 1 cig can kill you in as little as a year later.
Yeah, it won't cause an 'instant' death, but at the end, you're still either going to die instantly from gas intake or years down the road from lung cancer. Even if you're not going to die 'instantly', it's still killing you, just for some 'benefits and enjoyment'.
1 Cigarette cannot cause death as little as one year later. Many people who smoke do not develop lung cancer, however it does increase the risk. I'm not saying that it won't one day kill me I am just saying your example of pumping gasoline into your veins is totally irrelevant.
Well that's simply not true. There's no way to show that as even being a possibility
Not sure what facts you read up on but although smoking increases risks of such things it certainly doesn't make them definite. You can't say "if you smoke you WILL die of lung cancer" and many many counts of the world's oldest people claim that smoking has always been a big part of their lives
There was a study in america of that, I remember it on ABC or NBC or CNN or something.
Anyways, it does 'increase' your risks, but it's almost universally known your going to get some kind of health problem from smoking, and it's just getting worse year after year.
But even if you don't, why play russain roulette with your health for a few minutes of a nicatine 'high' a day?
My dad smoked since he was very young until he died of natural causes aged 69 without ever developing lung cancer or any other smoking-related illness.
When I was 11, two of my friends tried it so I thought EVERYONE had and didn't wanna feel left out, except they were like 13 at the time. It's actually really easily for me to stop & start so it's not because I'm addicted, nor is it because I think it's cool I just actually enjoy it
Yeah but to be fair it does look pretty cool as well.
Okay let's get bak on topic -.-
smoking does not look cool. Especially for young people
It quite clearly does as you are obv bare rebellious and mature if you smoke
i only really smoke if im drinking or if im drunk. i guess its just they "hey, **** it" attitude you get when you're drinking that makes me do it.
i dont hate smokers, im fine with people smoking around me or near me. its their choice, so i respect their opinions. i just wouldnt normally smoke sober.
That prob wasn't tobacco you could taste this morning
nah admittedly that was probs the sick, however it may of been the reason i had uncurable dry mouth.
Pubs, yes. Restaurants, no. The smell of smoke in a pub when you've got a drink is fine... I'd go as far as to say it makes the atmosphere in the pub nicer, if you know what I mean. But I don't want to smell cigarette smoke whilst eating...
I don't smoke and I don't have problems with people smoking.
Jen you're not 25? :S
Yeah I agree. If the second-hand smoke thing is as serious as it's made out to be, I'd be dead. My parents ran pubs when I was very young so I grew up in them until I was about 5 (and I did spend most of my time there cos I'd always be playing pool :D).
My mate who was my housemate last year, he sometimes smokes at parties and stuff, clearly just to fit in with everyone else who is standing outside smoking. Imo that's a bit pathetic. I also think kids who start it just because of the image, are a bit silly as well. In my dad's day (in Ireland) they didn't even realise how bad for you it was (in fact it wasn't even as dangerous as it is now) but nowadays every kid is told what the risks are so I find it hard to understand why they'd even start. My dad let me have a toke once when I was about 10, it made me cough and I didn't like it so I never touched them since. That's why he let me.
The only real reasons are Jen's 'because everyone else is' and Garion's to see if it could help him calm down :P.
Agreed, looks terrible.
Or it tells people you really couldn't give a :rude: about your health.

because im hot
it's cool :8
I smoke because I enjoy it. Kinda do it when I'm bored, a nice B&H gold or mayfair ;]
Smokers get addicted to the chemicals. And they feel something nice when they smoke cigs.
