Abbreviations Rules

Okay im a bit confused by this, why are we not aloud to say "cbf" ? we are aloud to say "omfg" which can be used in a bad way yet "cbf" which cant be, and is just a way of describing yourself as lazy is. Shorly thats not right?

I dont understand why u cant say something that cannot be used in a insulting or bad way, yet you can use another one which can?

When we have allowed things like omfg, lmfao and fml it is because most people look at these things and don't really think of the swear words so much. When someone uses cbf it makes me think of the swear word, and that's naughty :(. That would be my reasoning anyway. Besides, we'll unfilter a select few things but we're not gonna start unfiltering loads, because slowly but surely we'll end up with hardly anything in the filter at all!

General Management have requested we leave the filter as it is, for now :)

Thats just utterly silly, cbf is a harmless word and if u are allowing omfg why cant you allow cbf? I knw forums which allow cbf and block omfg becuase its worse, and then forums have over 300k members, its stupid. I get a warning for something, wen i was having a polite, quiet chat in a thread and did nothing wrong, and you wonder why i act up?

That is because the majority of the forum is mature enough to use the words -.-' We are treated like two year olds.

I know the meaning of the abbreviation, I'm just saying that's my reasoning behind it. You're more than welcome to disagree ;).

its soo stupid, cbf is used in normal sentences, omfg isnt, i dnt understand it at all. U punish me wen i am behaving and having a nice quiet chat, mite aswell missbehave then atleast u have real reason.

Also, if it is avoiding the filter (which i got a warning/infraction for recently) then why wasn't it added to the filter in the first place? Its a common abbreviation damnit!

That further reinforces my point... if it's used in real life, it has more naughty connotations if ya get me.

Either that or we could just refilter all the abbreviations that technically avoid the filter anyway, like it was before, yet was changed due to amounting pressure. Obviously its not working out that well so we could just revert back to when everything was treated the same and fairly.

But wouldn't it be better to put the ones you consider against the rules on the filter list so it comes out as *'s

As it could be confusing to people if they can say FML etc so a newer member may automatically assume the one in this example would be allowed as you're allowed to use the F word in other abbreviations

But yeh leave FML and omfg unfiltered and do whatever with rest but would be smarter move to stick em on the filter so people don't get infracted due to believing it was allowed :P

Not a good idea at all. If it's not in the filter, it doesn't need to be in the rule list, as the point of rules is to suggest and advise people on things which are not allowed, and since OMFG, LMFAO and FML are allowed, adding them to the rules would be yet another reason to have the rules downgraded. Speaking of which, where are these new rules? :P

Filtering abbreviations is pointless. A mass over-haul of all abbreviations should of been done, not pansy footing around the filter picking out the ones that have no reason to be in there. Abbreviations are not swear words. Abbreviations may contain swear words, but they're used as substitutions to common phrases and feelings. OMFG could be "Oh my flipping God", as it is wrong to assume a single letter is a swear word when a substitute could be chucked in anyway, especially when the rules clearly state rudeness is not allowed, and seeing as abbreviations are common in every day life for teenagers and people around this age mark, it would be stupid for Habbox taking the school route by attempting to block out common communication, when people are just going to use them anyway, especially when abbreviations are easy to create and abuse. FOM is one of them ;) Let Habbox speak formally, but don't dare to have your fanbase speak formally too, because nature and common modern etiquette is compeltely different.

Why don't you filter CBF then? Saves hassle.

I've never heard anyone say that abbreviation on or offline. Let's be honest, if this was unfiltered/allowed, we would see feedback threads emerging every week by certain people trying to push the boundaries further and further. The fact of the matter is, they probably don't actually care about what's allowed but would just like to kick up a fuss regardless with any excuse they get.

Because Gomme the other abbreviations mentioned are considered to be 'avoiding the filter' if posted because if 'cbf' as exampled by Titch was posted in full it would be can't be ******. All abbreviations of fully spelt filtered words always have been. So putting the ones that are allowed make sense IMHO as the members know exactly which ones are allowed. This is no different to when 'ass' was filtered but it was in the rules for years that LMAO was acceptable. I am coming to the conclusion though, myself, that perhaps it wasn't a good idea as there is no line to draw as to when to stop as members just seem to want them all declared okay and aren't satisfied with the recent easing up on it.

Surely punishment should be handed out when it is considered rude, pointless or inappropriate? As many have mentioned, saying "CBF" is something they won't say in real life, same with LMFAO. It's an expression to show an exaggeration, not all people LMAO or LOL around when they make these comments, the F is chucked in for good measure and is quite common amoungst teenagers. For example:

Like when Jade Goody passed away from cancer. The ones who couldn't care less got "attacked" by the ones pro-cause or pro-Jade, who told them it was inappropriate. In my case i was being well behaved having a quiet chat in the spam forum and sed i cbf to post a thread for something me and ryan were discussing, i dont see how in any way that can be deemed as naughty :S

Indeed, although it does depend on context. If you were posting for the sake of posting (which is annoying in spam and any walks of HxF life), then they have a point. But if you were saying you cannot be bothered or "CBF", in context with an event happening around the forum, then its perfectly acceptable as it isn't breaking any known rule as it is neither rude nor direct swearing (where it's out of context and serves no purpose). It's like mixing the pointless posting rules with another context really. If an abbreviation is pointless, guess what rule it (should) come under? :P

Again, I hope the new rule format is good, seeing as I posted a really good example of what the rules could be, without boring us with details.

I don't get that because Matt Garner told me 'omfg' was not allowed as I said it :/

I don't have an opinion one way or the other really - I just thought the rule could be clearer as to what is allowed. The merits as to what also could be allowed are up to the management/senior management. I can survive on the forum without saying any of these things but it seems some members seem to think it is important. Its a pretty subjective discussion because people express themselves in different ways but the forum management have to balance between what is acceptable to/for the younger members on the forum.

@gibs960 do you really think that the F in *** isn't swearing? :S
