More Than 30 Dead After Moscow Metro Blasts

Two suspected female suicide bombers have killed at least 37 people on Moscow's metro system during the height of morning rush-hour.


The first blast blew up a train carriage at the city's central Lubyanka station.

It is located underneath the offices of the Federal Security Service, the KGB's successor agency, and a mere half a kilometre from the Kremlin.

Authorities said 14 people on the train were killed, while 11 more died on the platform.

The second explosion went off some 45 minutes later at Park Kultury, which is the stop for Gorky Park, killing at least 12 people.

The city's mayor Yuri Luzhkov said information from the FSB indicated there had been two female suicide bombers.

Sky's Russia correspondent Amanda Walker said the attacks struck at the heart of the capital and at the busiest time.

"The underground is one of the deepest in the world. Actually getting access to the injured people and those affected will be an extremely difficult job," she said.

Reports said both stations were shut along with affected lines, while police were checking commuters' bags on other lines still open.

Suspicion has already fallen on Chechen rebels, who have been part of an insurgency in Russia's North Caucasus region.

Walker added if the attacks were carried out by women, that was not unusual for Russia.

"Around seven or eight years ago when there was a real spate of attacks outside the Caucasus region - a significant number of the militants involved with that were female.

"In Russia, they became known as the 'black widows'.

"The women said at the time the reason they were doing what they were doing was because of their anger at the brutal wars that took place in the 90s."

The last confirmed terrorist attack in Moscow was in August 2004, when a suicide bomber blew herself up outside a city metro station.

That attack killed 10 people and was claimed by Chechen rebels.

Russia has a lot of problems with certain regions wanting to be independent so i'm not entirely surprised but it is sad that they have to resort to killing those innocent. :(

I'm pretty certain it was the Chechens. They posted a video on the internet warning Russia about future attacks around a month ago. R.I.P all those that died. :(

Yeah I heard this on BBC Breakfast this morning... this is really upsetting.

Its all over the Russian Channels surprisingly. A few more have died now, I read the names of the dead people. It was quite upsetting tbh.

Yet more militant islam (to think if you speak out against it you are branded as a racist) - anyway very sad and condolences to those who have died.

russian goverment has helped quite alot. i've got russian satellite tv and the 1st channel which is like the coolest, most important one have opened helplines (well not themselves the russian goverment did.) all sorts of hotlines, hotlines just to talk to people that are stressed or depressed, hotlines to check if your family/friends are okay, to see what who went to what hospital. family's of the victims have also been given cash to help support them. putin went round to hospitals to personally check up on how the doctors are working and how the patients are.

Geert Wilders was banned from this country first time around for speaking out against militant islam.

Just to add to what I saying before, hundreds of people were offering to donate blood to those who needed it.

No he was actually banned because he was condemning the Koran which is not speaking about militant islamic terrorists. That's why I made the comment. :P

Geert Wilders was actually banned for the reason of his film being considered 'anti-islamic' when it was not, he welcomes muslims provided they conform with the western way of life and points out that pure Islam is not compatible with western democracy and western values. I agree with him, so whats so wrong with speaking out against militantism as he does?

The islamic view on homosexuality is not compatible with democracy and neither is the islamic viewpoint on womens rights and that is a fact.

Where you are going wrong is calling these cultures and traditions 'militantism' when it's not.

I am against intervention of countries cultures and traditions, and the same applies to islamic militant intervention which is attempting to change British and Dutch culture.

Islam is militant if you follow it to the hilt and it is becoming more and more dominant which poses a a threat to the western way of life and its values, we do not want that. As I said earlier on, its treatment of homosexuals and women for example is very harsh and is infact comparable to fascism (if a political party proposed poor treatment of homosexuals you'd call them fascist, why is the Koran any different?). Mr Wilders has stated very clearly that he welcomes anybody to the Netherlands provided they are moderate and not militant. Mr Wilders is also quite Libertarian and supports gay marriage and economic liberalism so he is definetly not the evil racist and fascist that the Labour Party attempt to paint him as.

Because the Koran is a book as is the bible and both can be seen to be extreme in their own ways. The actual book does not need to be condemmed. Those who use it as an excuse for Militant terrorism need to be condemned.
I do not agree with militants who try to force up to change our way of life either. I do not believe in Shariah law for instance but I do not like seeing races steretyped as all being the same. How many Britains live abroad and take their culture and traditions with them? Multi cultural Britain has been a fact of life for centuries. That's is why it is called the 'melting pot' of the world. Interestly you said that militant islamic terrorists were not a global threat in some discussions we have had and now it seems you are changing your mind. It seems to be the case here as Joseph Stalin is saying it is pointing to the Chechnians. Maybe one day you will agree with the fight against this terrorism.

This is the kind of thing Geert Wilders is up against, he is not playing the race card but is merely critcising a powerful and influential book which he believes is incompatible with western democracy and values.

But that could be said about a lot of religions and their religious teaching not just the Koran - he has singled out this particular faith. The koran is powerful as is the bible but as I said before only a minority will use it as an excuse for terrorism. He may think it's incompatible but that's the way of the world it evolves and you can't stop it changing. People have been trying to since the crusades.

He has singled out islam because we are fighting islamic extremism and islam is a fast growing religion which is causing major shockwaves within Europe and the United Kingdom with the appearance of radicals and the 'islamification' of local communities. That is why he has singled that out, not to mention the fact that western culture and values are built on christianity so why would he be against christianity, especially when radical christianity poses no threat in this part of the world anymore.

Well that is not islamic extremism is it? That is immigration and cultural change. He has a right to his point of view of course but he cannot expect everybody to hold up their arms and praise him. People of all races congregate in the same place quite often, Brits in spain, Jews in Golders Green, Chinese in Soho, Greeks in Palmers Green and Wood Green in North London etc etc. They all enjoy their own places to worship and have their own unique culture. Tell me then why normal muslims are therefore villified for doing the same? Why is he asking for no more mosques to be built - why doesn't he ban further building of all religious buildings?

This inncident has said to have been from Chechens who have been funded from exterior terrorist groups etc. that's where all the weapons come from. This actually does come as quite a shocker, as any form of violence in Moscow did die down- with the last being 6 years ago. It is said that Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov was the one who gave out orders.

I actually feel this attack was a wake up call and was to show Moscow that the Chechens were still there and should not be forgoten as they are capable of comitting such atrocities.

The death toll is now up to 40. Just thought I'd let you know

Well they have found terrorist cells there in the past but they seem to be pretty good at arresting them before anything has happened.
