Rise Against Media - Non Habbo web station needs presenters/DJ's!

Hi there. I'm looking for DJ's and Presenters to work on an online radio station. It's non habbo related, supports multiple genere or dedicated genere shows (so whatever music you like really), and is also licensed by PPL and PRS. We also have nothing against presenters doing shows on one ore more other stations at the same time, although there must be mixed advertising (in other words all the stations need to get the same ammount of advertising).

We are currently voluntary as we aren't making any money but aim to start gaining revenue via advertising on the site and radio once things start to pick up. Our goal is to be able to earn enough to pay for all of our services (as I put all the money in at the moment) and also to be able to pay all staff.

We aren't just a radio station, more of a media company, with TV, Film coming into it to, although our main focus is the radio side at this current moment in time. We are however looking to set up an online record label like service soon, to work alongside the radio. This would allow bands to be able to get airtime, earn some money on our upcoming online store and also get free recording time and music video shoots.

What's with the name?

The name I beleive the person who thought of it was a fan of the band Rise Against - I used to have another name - P.T/A.M which where mine and a friends initials but when he decided to leave management and just help out occasionaly, we decided a new name would be better.

It sounds like a petition against media though. It suggests you don't like media although you yourself are a media outlet.

If you have, it will render your last post useless. If you haven't, I suggest you read up on it and then come back with a better mission statement.

I'm going to do film as I'm currently doing my second last year of my degree in TV & Film Production. I'm interested in media as a whole, so plan to be like I suppose a smaller version of the BBC lol

Better start joining other people's projects in the industry before you try and set up a company without experience, trust me.

I'm just running it as a small thing at the moment. A few other people in uni are doing the same thing - means I've got something i can work on while doing other projects.

Sorry about the late reply had a busy few weeks. Just shot a music video over the weekend and shooting a short film next weekend,

Currently all our projects are self funded. All the projects im currently doing are part of our degree, but I do have plans to do some outside of University projects and possibly community projects, which we could get some funding towards. Currently all the main crew have been putting money towards it, we did try and get some outside funding but had problems. We know of one place, but we are saving that for our next final year project.

Theres a lot of ways you can save money. People see the large budgets for major films, but for short films you can get it a lot cheaper. For example, we used some professional actors, but due to it been a university film were able to negioate a £30 a day fee, which is quite cheap for actors. We could have used friends and students and got it very cheap, but then our work would suffer from it.

The thing with short films is they aren't really a money maker - there mainly a calling card - something that you can use as examples of previous works to help you go bigger in the future. A lot of people try to go straight for the big film, while as its better to do a really good five minute film, do a few more and then gradually start going bigger.

How much are your crew giving toward the project(s)?

What background does your team have in the media industry?

Well the people I do the film projects with are like myself students on the same course. We are putting in £100 for this project each, with 5 - so £500. As we did most of our shots outdoors and at my home we paid nothing for locations, with most of the money going to food and drink, cast, accomidation and travel expenses. We had really all the props we needed - the artist brought all his equipment etc.

Short films give people experience, but they don't take people anywhere. The only way forward is to aim big - features.

Thats not entiely true there quite a few directors and producers who have made it big through short films. Channel 4 do the 3 minute wonder films which would really give you the boost to launch you into the industry.

Misawa sorry but short films do get you places. Most directors started small. We've had former students down who have been working on short films, many winning awards at film festivals. This can get them noticed, and get them contacts, and start to get you into the major films. As I mentioned earlier short films are kind of like a calling card, they get you noticed.

If you want to work in the film world you often have to start from the bottom and make your way up. Many producers and so on start as runners. A producer who lecturers at our university today said that a lot of really good potential directors haven't done anything since he left University for two main reasons - Either their lazy, they just don't have the ambition or their far to picky - the best way to make it is just to get yourself in everything, even if its doing a really small job, if you keep doing it and coming back showing you've got ambition hopefully someone will notice you.

But to just jump into a large film is extremley hard, short film not only shows the world what you can do it also gives you experince. Every short film i've worked on has its fair share of problems, but then its like that in the major films to. But the thing is, from each problem you learn something new which you can take away and apply.

VERY few short films take anyone anywhere. Studios don't want short films, producers don't want short films. I already mentioned the experience they give. Hollywood doesn't come calling from seeing a short unless it generates such a buzz that they miraculously get into the Oscars. Shawn Acker, the guy who did the great short 9 won an Oscar back in '06, got the power to make a so-so feature. That happens to a handful of nominees once a year, 1000s of short films are made every day. It's the same with film festivals - they used to be great for getting deals, now only the main three generate any business.

As for film-makers starting off as a runner - yes, that is true, although more often than not it is as a production assistant. I worked as a runner and a production assistant on two major features before I worked full-time in the industry.

Partie, unfortunately no one takes any notice of those Channel 4 and BBC Blast entries, as interesting as they sometimes are.

Sorry but I think thats the problem with media at the moment - theres no support. Everyone has dreams, and I know that most people just end up doing a normal mundane job, but some people actually set their hearts on a dream and try and achieve it and its like people try to crush their dreams.

I know you have to be realistic, and I know everything could fail, but I'm going to give it a go, I've had problems with my station itself in the past, and we have issues at the moment, but I'm going to keep pushing and pushing because I do beleive in it. Anything is possible.

If you have a dream to be a professional in the film game - chase it. If you want to make shorts, do it. I'm not swaying you away from making them, I'm just being realistic - giving you the view of a professional. I made shorts years ago for fun, but I got into the business by pursuing my dream, and thinking big, so here I am. Like I said, nothing can stop you from wanting something and making shorts, I'm just saying that the only truly realistic way of breaking into the industry in this day and age is to think big. Getting production assistant jobs and learning how real sets work is worth a lot more to you than making a short film, trust me.

I would support you all the way - which is why I've given you my industry-perspective response on breaking into the business. Aspiring film-makers and actors come to me every single day asking how to get into the industry. I always assist them as best I can.

Well ages ago I wanted to make films for fun, but then decided about looking into it as a job - set up a kind of film company - it was just me and a few mates, but we had no money, no equipment, no experience, no cast or crew etc. I decided to do something else I'd wanted to do for a while, online radio, with the idea if it worked well, and got some revenue, we could slowly move into the film industry. As I work on University projects and future outside projects, I put them online.

The thing is short film is experience, and it helps to have experience. Anyone can decide to work in the film industry, but it helps having experience e.g. knowing how the industry works, production wise knowing about the different paperwork, knowing about equipement etc. This is really what the degree is for.

The thing is I could try and get a job in the industry, but having examples of my work will help, and knowledge will also help. This is a starting point. In the next few months. This is our short film from last year, its far from perfect, a few sound issues and such but I think for a 1st year piece it turned out pretty good and got top marks.

Having a crew does help. Part of the way you get big is contacts.
