Is this someone playing a prank on me?

There is a track next to my house that I ride my atv on, loads of people know that I ride around there and I have been doing for the past 4 years. However today I came close to a pretty nasty accident when I had to swerve to avoid a large boulder. With the sun shining behind me directly onto it, I didn't even notice it was there until it was almost too late. I'm not really sure what to make of it, could it be someone playing a prank they think is funny or could it be someone trying to say that they don't want me riding there? Whoever put it there will of had to use a pickup/van/machinery of some kind because it is unbelievably heavy to the point that 2 grown men can't even budge it an inch. I took a photo of it to show to my dad and if necessary report it to the police. Pranks like this just aren't funny and I certainly don't want other things happening like this (that's if it was a prank).

Is it not a private lane? Do cars and that use that lane. Maybe it's their to stop cars and that going down their.

Right so let's get this straight. You're riding your ATV (road legal or not I don't know), down a country lane where the families who live there have probably chosen the location due to the quietness. You believe they'll be happy with the racket that ATV's produce? They sound awful. I'd make sure your ATV is legal before you get the police involved. Plus it could be private land.

if its not private and if its not meant for vehicles the council could've put it there

Occasionally cars do get sent down because their sat nav thinks it's a road. Not all sat navs think it is a road though, just the older ones I think.

The path/track is surrounded by fields and the nearest house is quite far away so I can't imagine it annoying them. Like I said, I have been riding there regularly for the past 4 years so if they had a problem with the noise they would of done something about it by now.

Part of it is ours however we maintain all of it so the council often do us favours or give us free gravel for us to maintain it.

i think the council put it there or some kind of farmer becuase they've seem vehicles going down and wanted to stop it

No complaints at all! There are a few people I don't get along with but what makes this so strange is the boulder itself. It can't be anyone my age who put it there as they will of had to use a car. If it was the council then it's a little unthoughtful/unprofessional because it could so easily cause an accident. Wouldn't a wooden fence of been more appropriate with some kind of gate or thing to climb over for walkers?

Thats crazy. Ask the council if they put it there, and if they can remove it

Think I'm gonna push it out the way, just need a few people to help. And no it's not road legal.

If it's your land then you can drive the ATV down there whether it's road legal or not. If you were driving down your part of it, then that's fine, but if it wasn't, then the council could take away your ATV so...

if it is your bit of the land...
-Ring the council and ask about it...if they say they did it, ask why, say it's a hazard and should be removed or give an appropriate alternative.
-If they say they didn't, ask them what you can do about removing it.

If it isn't.
-Ring the council, claim you saw it when walking down the lane, and say it's a potential hazard for vehicles, then follow the steps above as per their reply.

Think I'm going to leave the council out of it because the last thing I want is them coming down telling me where and where not I am allowed to ride. :P

If it private land, then it is not your problem. If it public land then inform the council.

Still haven't found out how it has ended up there, it could actually of been the council who put it there to stop people from using it as an off-road shortcut. If it was the council and the reason they put it there was to stop vehicles, isn't it a bit silly having something of that shape and size without a sign or anything? It won't be long before an un-expecting vehicle drives into it.

reason being is that type of block and the way it's been cut seems all too much for a prank

hell'a lot of hassle for a prank. I think you're being dramatic. Probably the council. They're well within their right.

if the council put that there they've been hit well hard by budget cuts.

Seems a bit dodgy for a council to do that. If the land is somehow maintained by some sort of local or natural authority, then they may of done it, but a council wouldn't do that, they only put fences up, chains and other things to stop that. Some areas of land have a special type of group to maintain it, rather than directly through the council. If it was the council, then they're pretty odd where Apple live :P
