Got a bit of a babysitting dilemma

Hiya,

Basically someone's rung me today and has asked me if I was interested in babysitting. It's not strictly babysitting as I'd be looking after a 16 year old boy who is mentally fine but has very little control over his body. He can still talk and the pay is VERY good (60 pounds every weekend) but I'm not sure if I can physically and mentally take care of this person who is actually the same age as I am. Also his dad has asked if I could do 2 nights every weekend. I stressed that this was too much and at most I could manage 1 night every weekend. Obviously I'd miss out on a fair chunk of my social life, sacrificing a Friday or Saturday night every weekend. Also I have to give him baths and I mean dude that would just be a bit awkward.

So yeah what do I do?
Should I just suggest a trail evening to see how everything goes?

:S They're asking you to give a 16 year old boy a bath? If he was mentally disabled aswell then okay but shouldn't they get a guy to do stuff like that

But if you go for the trial then dont forget to wash his winkle

I would try it out, it's something for the CV at the end of the day.

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. Couldn't he just like not have a bath that one night :(

Anyway the dad said he'd ring back in 3 mins and there was someone at the door, but he hasn't rung back yet and he used an unknown number thingy! He didn't realise I was 16 myself so maybe that was an excuse to not organise anything :o

Tha bath bit made me cringe, but the pay does sound rather good and there's no harm giving it a go. :)

Did he call you rosie or rose? Cos he might of thought you were an old lady or something :L

If he does phone back then just say that you won't feel comfortable giving him baths for obvious reasons. Plus when someone tries to get someone else to do stuff like that then it obviously means it isn't an easy job bathing him lol

you know what, I don't even think he knew my name. He'd obviously thought about the conversation a lot before and was kinda rushing and stuff.

Yeah I think I will just do it once and then if it's tres awkward i'll be like sorry but I don't really think i'll be able to do it. Well no it's cause they're going out (idk I think they're like party animals).

and yeah the money is such an incentive and would make my life so much easier but meh

I think you should go for it. The money is good, it will be an interesting experience for you and it will look good on your CV. I can understand you not being comfortable having to give him a bath but I suppose it wouldn't be wrong to suggest that when you do give him a bath that he's in swimming shorts or something.

May I ask how you know these people? It's just they don't seem to know your name/age or anything :P

Its £60 you didn't have before, give it a bash, she how it goes, If you do have to bath him as said above, maybe suggest swimming shorts? If you don't like it, well you don't have to do it again and your £60 richer.

Do a trial evening whilst the parents are there IMO.

i personally think they're asking too much of you, and i wouldn't go for it myself. it's quite alot for you to deal with alone and if it were me i would be worried that if anything went wrong it would be completely on my shoulders. yr not trained to deal with the physically disabled (well i don't assume you are?!) and henceforth i don't think it's appropriate.

hmm well I'd say do a trial run, see how it goes first. Like any person really, there will probably be times when he's good as gold and times when you just cant wait to get out of there fast! Won't know til you try though, good luck :D

Which is why you would get him to put on swimming shorts first, and wash his "bits" himself, I'd probably say it's worth it for the CV and money, worth a go at least :).

I think the opposite - money is not bad but I think you would find it extremely stressful and very physically demanding especially the bathing. If in any doubt at all I would just say no.

aha they got my number from this couple that I do babysitting for occasionally, but I just think they gave him a list of numbers

I think that is a very big ask and you would need to make sure you, yourself is mentally and physically ready but as Oli said it is also a great thing to put down on your CV? Why not ask the dudes parents for a trial run to see if you are up for it? there is no harm in trying this sort of thing isn't for everyone.

Anyway yeah you prob legally can't do this job if he's bad enough to not be able to wash himself n ting, also you have to wonder how often does he bedwetting if he has that little control and all other sorts of problems
