This is my first alteration, it took me an hour. There are a lot of line issues. Example: the lines
go diagonal too much or too little etc. The house is poorly shaded, I'm going to need time with that but I am tired so I decided to post it now to see the criticism I get.

Rate or Hate?

As you said, the lines are the main issue here. The diagonal lines should be like this;

Like you said the shading needs work, although the different colours used on the bus is good. :)

In additions to the lines as shown above, the grass has no shading either. I think you tried too much without understanding much about shading and nothing about the isometric view point, try a small alt and just do more over time.

I have a lot of small alts on my computer. Whether it's a terrier with a bow tie. A zombie. A house. etc. I got bored with doing all those so I tried this. So basically it's not my "first alt" but my "first scene"

It's quite nice, but I think it needs to be shaded a lot more. :)

The grass needs a lot of work, but I really like it! Hope you post the finished result.

I like the magic wand/sunflower.. that's about it - 3/10.

I like the bag.. ;3
The rest is just the lines and the shading, NICE TRY! :D

You got bored of small alts but not a large one? :S There's no real point doing something this large if you can't master the basics.

It has potential, i suggest using more vibrant colors, not so toned and dark. Keep it in ratio though, don't clash the colors. Heres a great website to help you get your grips around pixel art.

It's good but the diagonals are a bit messy :P
I also feel the grass is missing something, and what's that random little messy star thing in the middle of the grass? It also needs a bit more shading.

But I'm loving the backpack! And for that… +rep I'm loving the bus too!!
