Hi,
Well recently i've noticed a bit of a decrease in people using reputation up untill Christmas when its used constantly. I've noticed all this year no matter what the comment says for a negative rep it seems to be removed, I mean i've -repped Josh! about 2-3 times and every time its been removed even though i've left a good comment on why im negative repping him?
It sort of defeats the object nowdays...

I too feel I've made similar -reps, being entirely valid and then also removed. Defeats the point.
I'd like to see a free-for-all in terms of reputation - that means you can ask for rep and rep anybody for any reason.
How about it?
I think a change needs making, but probably not one which allows the top ten reputations on the forum to +rep each other for no reason.Quote:

Dunno about the -reps thing. I remember when oli was fm it was pretty bad also cos he used to go through his own rep like every week and remove any -reps people gave him because he was an abusing little shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhakes ma maracas

It's been a broken system for years anyway.
I think the downfall for the system was when we sold it and offered out loads as prizes.
It holds no relevance to anything, the system is suppose to be a way to gauge the quality of a member and their contribution however it doesn't do that.
Though I would much rather do the following before making it a free for all as suggested:
1) Reset all the scores back to 0 and impose strict rules (though completely impractical).
2) Remove the system entirely.
3) Rename the system to the "Pointless" system and have it called "Pointless Points" and "Point Power" and +/- Points.
However if I did any of these I would be burnt at the stake by 99% of the forum.
I don't believe negatives or positives ought to be removed EVER no matter how abusive or pointless they appear - the comment can be edited perhaps if it really causes a problem but the key is in the word "reputation", meaning what others think of you. If one person takes a disliking to you then it does bring your overall reputation down, no matter how small an increment it may be by. I also think it ought to take away the full power rather than half when you -rep someone, just because it makes absolutely no sense not to.
What about when people pointless rep each other or revenge rep?
I guess reputation is sort of popularity so i guess pointless reputation should actually be allowed.
That's because all 3 are silly and an overreaction to something that isn'ta problem. You're meant to earn reputation so selling it is a no but as you have to win something to get it as a prize you could say you've earned it in that way. It's often said "you'd have to win 3 comps to match my 1 +rep" as if that's a bad thing but it's not. That's the way it should be.Quote:

In response to the question in the thread title, the point is that it gives you something to earn. That could be making brilliant posts orgoing through the effort of entering competitions and events with the former naturally being the mostrewarding.It gives people the chance to say 'well done' or 'MERRY CHRISTMAS HERE'S A FREE +REP' but mostly the former. It's all harmless fun that isn'tharming anyoneand when weleave the forum, we won't give a toss about it.

Pointless reputation is still reputation. People not liking Justin Bieber because "he's gay lol" when he's clearly not is pointless but still affects his overall reputation in the real worldQuote:

[@]@Jin[/@] , Those three suggestions as was previously said are overreactions to a problem that can be fixed a lot easier (I'm not too sure if you were joking about them though) .

A person with a high rep power in your case could just think it's funny to repetedly -rep a new user/ user that doesn't post much just too see them get into the red zone (and you know as well as i do that the kind of people who would do that exist on this forum).
Also to whoever said it, it's not as easy as that to check for revenge reps Jin. If i wanted to revenge rep somebody i would just go around it smartly, wait a few days or more and then find a new post of his/hers that's a goodcandidate . How couldyou prove it's revenge rep then?
I reiterate what i said earlier though, -rep does get removed far too easily. If something needs to be changed it's that.

I am and have always been up for rep to be treated equally. Even up until a while back they were removing pointless +reps i believe. I don't mean to be the grinch but the thread in spam every year for christmas that gives people rep is pointless, hence why it's in spam. Not that I disagree with it, it's nice for people to share some lovin' at christmas but if it's as easy as it is to get a -rep removed it should be the same for +rep to balance things out.
Yeah but that doesn't prove it's a revenge rep. It doesn't prove that the person who -repped the 2nd time -repped said person because they -repped him first. There's no proof of that. It could just be a coincidence. Highly unlikely but still impossible to prove. It could actually be a legitimate -rep that just happens to be from the same person they -repped earlier in the week/month.Quote:

But then it sort of doesn't really respect the people who have been using this forum for years....
Again taking the word reputation literally, those who have higher reputations in the real world do have a bigger impact on those they dislike. Kid on the street says they don't like Person X and it makes very little difference, but someone highly respected says it and Person X takes a far bigger bashing to their reputation.Quote:

The only time intervention is needed if it becomes completely insensitive or bullying e.g. mocking someone because a loved one has died. Any rep really. Sometimes +reps are removed. They used to warn members requesting that any pointless + or - rep maybe removed at the same time, whether you asked or not.
I feel that if you know -reps have been removed which unless the person tells you they have you would not know then if you are not happy about it then complain via the complaints system or via pm. At least then you would get a response as to why it was removed. Personally I very, very rarely use -rep. It is easier to reply to the post to get your point across imo.Quote:

Why on earth when everyone types @ Stephen!, the messages go to me? I don't want these.
The system ignores '!' if I remember correctly, people need to be putting tags around them.
Reputation needs to be made more lenient but not drastically changed i think. Should be interesting to see what management have to say on this matter.
