idea.

i don't know if this is too complex, if it is then just ignore me but i thought it might be a good'un:

recently there have been a lot more threads starting with the words "what are/have you" and i actually think these threads are quite enjoyable, i do enjoy seeing what other people are wearing irl or purchasing or even drinking but i don't specifically agree that they contribute much to the forum in general (whilst just being 'fun' threads).

what i propose is we made a new subforum within discuss anything "what are you..." or something and perhaps only make post count increase for every 5/10 posts you make within that forum. i don't know if that's possible at all, but it could be some middle ground in between people who hate the threads, people who overuse the threads and people who enjoy them and post once in a while.

i've seen these kind of subforums on other habbo forums and they are extremely popular (allbeit they still have postcount enabled)

ANYWAY just an idea to stop threads being constantly abused//closed//moaned about.

I think MattG or Jordan suggested something very similar which I'm in favour for however I think it shouldn't have any post count at all, really.

But yeah, this was suggested by Chris and as far as I am aware it's still being discussed. I think no post count should be on it at all because they ain't really contributing to a discussion. Problem that might occur that has been mentioned already is that

If we out threads into that that we think will be 1 word replies then aren't we going to stop discussion even more?

But I say we trial this idea anyway!

In terms of the post count only being counted for every X amount of posts - This isn't possible by default VBulletin and I haven't really looked into any plugins for this either at the moment. There is a simply yes or no though in regards of post count! :P

@Alex3213; @Jordan; i think offering a 5-10 post per 1 post would offer an incentive to post and might keep the forum busier, and besides if they're all away in their little forum people aren't going to mind someone getting (for example) 3 post count for 30 posts.

I don't know if your idea of gaining one post count for every 5 posts is possible, but if it is then I think it would still give people the chance to abuse it. Its still being discussed though so hopefully we'll get an answer soon.

i think moving everything to a forum where post-count is disabled would have a detrimental effect on posting (just me though) and it would become a defunct subforum much like forum games, which would be fine if the forum was more alive and kicking (but it isn't).

Then will it really matter if that 3 for 30 posts is just ignored? If Matt has to go researching for a plugin then I don't think it's worth the hassle. I don't like 1 word threads because nothing ever gets out from them and it's purely because of the title of the thread. As opposed to 'Do you want kids?', I think something like 'Children' as a title would work much better because it already doesn't restrict them as much. Perhaps I'm going off on a tangent here and it doesn't make any sense but that's my thoughts on 1-word threads because of a single question in the title.

however, i don't really think it would be a "hassle" to research. if it doesn't exist after a quick search (that could take what 10 minutes) then he doesn't need to further research it. just an idea to keep the forum active on a regular basis as the posting contest was obviously a nightmare (talking of which: when do results of such get released @xxMATTGxx;)

I should have made my post more clear. I am certainly not against a "quick search" as you call it, but certainly not hours upon end looking for something that does a job that is certainly not essential. :)

Don't understand why post count is such a big deal, but I like this idea. Those threads are all over the forum, though. By secluding them to one place you risk reducing activity/participation somewhat.

Urgh, no more forums or sub-forums. Keep them in the forums they are relevant to e.g. "what car do you drive" in the Transport/Holidays forum. What if a new member makes one of these threads and it is soon moved to another forum? Common sense dictates it is the right forum, because obviously anything about fashion must surely go in the fashion forum. It'll put them off because it just hints that they've done something wrong and the forum is a total mess for not following what can only be described as common sense. If I post a thread "what are you doing for the run up to the olympics", I would choose the Sports forum, because the Olympics is a big sporting event and therefore relevant to that forum.

A new forum would make the forum an even worse place than it is now. These clearly contribute if you find them interesting, so that's a huge flaw in your logic. People are constantly worried about post count, when post count means sweet sod all on this forum. You're making a mountain out of a mole hill and a drama for something really unnecessary. Forum activity is already very poor, don't make it worse with more red tape and mindless bureaucracy.

Which proves (á la forum games) that people for the most part don't actually care about those threads at all and just want any easy, non-discussive way to boost post count

That specific title wouldn't come under this as it requires some actual explanation of events beyond "ye i lyk it" or "cornflakes", and is a topic that you can have an actual discussion about rather than just answering the question and never really having anything possibly relevant to add later

I would suggest that since there have been very few such threads following the end of the posting comp, no-one (beyond Bethie) really finds them that interesting :P they certainly aren't constructive/discussive for the most part in any case, but having a special area for them rather than putting them in spam where they would otherwise belong means anyone who does actually like these threads for some reason doesn't have to hunt through spam and get lost

okay chillax. was only a suggestion not a petition for war. and in regards to the flaw in my logic, i find looking at pictures of cats all day long fascinating it doesn't mean me posting them on here would contribute to the forum in anyway at all.

People are still posting in them so there must be some interest... It's as if you're suggesting there are oridinary people using this forum like you and me, and then there are forum elves that come out and only post in these threads and nothing else. The constructive and discussive argument is so droll and pointless, no forum has purely constructive and discussive threads. Forums are usually a form of social entertainment, but for some reason the belief here is that they must strictly be constructive. If the "counter-productive moderation" thread is anything to go by, this strict behaviour is more damaging to the forum than the posts the users are making.

If you find them fascinating then surely people posting them is contributing to the forum, because they are of interest to you and others? There's the contradiction. If people are posting in these threads, there is clearly an interest. Like I said to FlyingJesus, it's like there are two types of users - real people and elves. For some reason we're in denial about these threads and their uses.

If the part in bold was removed from the pointless rule then perhaps that would solve some of these issues? I don't think theres anything wrong with trialing a separate forum for these threads, but if that failed or management decide against it then removing this part of the rule could be a better option.

Lets be honest, if post count didn't count, there would be a very little amount of posts in there compared to what there is now, which is quite understandable really.
I quite like the idea of only 1 post counting every 5/10 posts however, and I guess there is a change of a plugin being available.
