Want to help develop a new social networking website?

Hey,
As some of you might know, i'm putting together this site
www.yearbookuk.com
its a social networking site more tipped onto the 'Educational' Side of connecting with freinds
So far some of my plans have been done thanks to my good freind Ryan Forbes. But my dream for this site is so that students can upload. pictures, videos and even post 'Diary Entries' and look back at different ones as the years progress
i already have a small team of 7. (2 Admins, 2 Head Moderators, 2 Moderators, 1 Chief Technical officer) And im looking to expand this will be voluntry work (so no pay) but people that help out will get an offer of a permanent job (whether they will take the offer is up to them) and will get every single ounce of credit for any of their creations.
it don't have to be coding. like our CTO he helps with the marketing and reports etc so he gets credit for that plus he got his job.
Plus on the bright side if this site did kick off you would start to get paid :)

My theory is that facebook will have its day. i mean come on facebook can't rule the world forever? a new site could take its throne? could that be yearbookuk? you decide!

I think 'blogs' might be better than 'Diary Entries' if you are looking at the older range of students, that's just me though! It seems a cool idea though but what's different to others such as thestudentroom may I ask?

However, good luck with it! I can't really be involved but I hope you do well :).

My only opinion is to change the name, people from outside the UK will not join.

That was my first choice but all the good names like Yearbook.com/.co.uk etc were taking
i wanted to go for RememberMe.com but its taken

facebook cant last for ever.

Facebook is clean, simple, easy to use, cutting egde and has stupid amounts of users. I don't mean to put a downer on things but if Google can't do it, no one can.

www.buddyweb.me is a social networking site owned by a friend of mine.

There was also a local newspaper article about it. 2,000 new members a day and rising. It's much better than facebook, it just needs more publicity.

The problem really is that everyone is on Facebook and a lot of people these days would rather use one service than have to use multiple. I'm looking at creating a social side for my radio, kind of like a community but to run something that's primarily just a social network is tricky at the moment. Although MySpace used to be big so you never know.

Yea but you have to push for what you believe in so if i never get this site up how does anyone know its future? thats why im going to try besides im renaming it and im getting iDenning to redesign it.
All should be ready by the end of this week or saturday/sunday. :)

Seriously have fun with it, learn from it, just don't put money into it because its just not going to take off.

Don't listen to people who say it'll come of nothing. Look at FB. He was pissing about, creating a crappy social site and now wheres he's got to.

Don't let people knock back hope, the most richest people are where they are today for starting at this point.

Facebook got in just at the right moment, it was clean, simple and everyone was starting to post stuff online, the internet wasn't just for bloggers anymore. Over 900 million people have up to thousands of pictures on there, all their friends from school and work, a TON of posts over the years... unless you can provide an easy method for people to move everything over before even managing to entice them to your site... well, it's not gonna happen.

I still personally think there's an edge in the social networking market, thus why i am planning to put something into it. Not a facebook, not a bebo.
Here's a hint, you notice some people still use bebo, myspace and all the other 'retro' social media sites, what if they were all joined together 8-)

I currently have a very unique idea that could quite easily take off, however I don't have the resources nor funding that would be able to cope with the demand, therefore I will wait for someone else to clock on and do it themselves.. a shame really.

I know this is a bit of topic but you know what I really find strange - people complaining about Facebook privacy but ignoring the fact that there are loads of networks where people can actually view who's viewed their profile (sometimes for pro members). I feel that's a big breach privacy wise

Youmeo, was pretty bad attempt in my eyes. It was the one @Invent and @Awfy worked for. What i mean is so you can completely connect, via wall posts etc etc. One stream. Youmeo wasn't one i don't think

This post sums up the thread but I do agree don't put tons of money into it because at the end of the day you could piss it down the pan. Best of luck pal.

I think that's the site I had in mind. I can't see how having a integrated stream would work. People get annoyed on Facebook when others have there twitter linked it it. A site with no specific meaning other then to view all content would make searching for the things you want to actually see near enough impossible or harder to do so using the 3rd party site making it pointless. If someone could make a hybrid or a way to work around this problem then they've got something half decent.

The problem is a lot of people use different social networks for different things. My audience on Facebook is a lot different to my audience on Twitter, I use both for different things... maybe it's just me but I don't particularly want them to cross paths.

Everyone is setup on Facebook, they keep their service cutting edge and fresh (come on, people complain about the layout changes but they learn to love them) and everyone has ALL their data linked to/upload to it. The reluctance for people to move because of where their data is stored is the major problem because that reluctance mounts up when you have huge groups of friends that don't want to budge until the rest of their friends do in the first place... it's a vicious cycle in that respect.

Facebook is a very personal yet diverse and public medium, if you can think up a new social site by all means give it a go, but I reckon Facebook's here to stay. Your best bet would be to go after smaller sites like LinkedIn.

Yeah exactly - Linkedin works because it's for a niche - it's like an online CV and handy for people job hunting. If you could think of something similar that will appeal to an audience and actually get them to want to have an account on it separate to facebook then you have a winner. That however is the tricky part
