Avoiding Filter

I'm pretty sure this is the second or third time I've created this thread, I suppose it's just confusion, not anyone's fault but anyhow. In a post I created I said the word 'Fecking' apparently this is avoiding the filter. Fu.cking and Fecking are two different words and a quick google search would indicate that. I've been warned in the past on a few occasions for saying Fecking but it got removed for the same reason. And just before someone replies with something like 'You shouldn't have to express yourself through these words', its more so a habit and I don't see anything remotely offensive about it.

Can you filter the word if its deemed as inappropriate and ask the moderation team to contact a member of management if they're unsure on a word or need them to filter it. I didn't purposely avoid the filter, I say it regularly, if you look up some of my previous posts you'll see I use it now and then.

This has been brought up many times as you say haha. Although fecking is a word in itself I believe that some members have been using it as a way to avoid the filter. I'm not saying you are but some have. I'm sure if Martin decides that its inappropriate then it will be added to the filter. :)

If a word has been used continuously to 'avoid the filter' put on another word then surely common sense would tell whoever sets the filter to simply add it, rather than warn users for it time and time again. Add fecking to filter if it's inappropriate.

It would have been but it was dismissed by previous forum management :P

Theres a thread in the mod forums now waiting for Martin's reply on it but really we've never had a definite answer on this word. Personally with me it's just another way to say the word *******.

Yes the word ****/fecking means something but the way people are using it on the forum is a way to get around the filter of *******

Fecking isn't a rude word and technically can't be used to avoid the filter because it is where the other F word stole it's use from. The naughty F word is just feck reincarnate. I don't give a feck, for example, is actually quite accurate, as it means worth. So you don't give a worth of whatever the subject is.

Well it doesn't really mean something, it's just an irish word for the one that's already in the filter. I see they've filtered the word without its 'ing' suffix which is why it's puzzling that fecking still remains unfiltered.

I don't mean it in that context though. Can you imagine someone saying 'Here love, want to go for a fe.ck' it just doesn't make sense. It's just like when someone says 'You're so friggin annoying' the only reason why it looks worse is because only one letter is changed :P but it can be used in different context and to me, it doesn't even remotely relate to fu.cking.

Not to mention that if you call someone "f.eckless", you're effectively saying "worthless", as that's all that f.eck means - "worth".

I dropped my views on it in the moderator thread for Martin ;) I'm with you on this one Richie. Never been a fan of the filter on this forum.

As soon as I PM'ed you Richie I created a thread in the mod forum to see if we can filter it.

Well my personal view is that there shouldn't be any swear words filtered.. but hey **.. what do I know :)

In all seriousness, were the words being abused? It seemed like it was only rare occasions people would mis-use them, which makes it a bit of a waste of time to filter them, considering there was hardly any time spent stopping members from using them - simply because they seldom used the words to avoid the filter, intentionally.

Is **** still filtered? That's Di.ck if it is.

Oh, nevermind. It is :P Wasn't it unfitlered not so long ago because no-one really uses it to mean willy anymore? I still dream of the day I can say "Any Tom, Richard and Harry" without being stopped :(

Ah jaysus I thought you were ageeing that fe.cking isn't a swear. I don't really agree with removing the filter, its grand the way it is and although I'm older and can handle 'the heat' ;) there is younger users that we shouldn't exactly influence :P

I think there has always been some confusion over this word, and going back on the amount of times its been reported (loads), it seems that quite a few members (especially the younger ones) get confused with it and I guess that is due to it similarity with the other filtered word. Personally I don't have much of a problem with the word itself, I know it means other things etc, but its very often used in the same situation you would use the other one, and the fact it looks similar just makes it a little bit less obvious to some people it seems. I think its better off filtered because it will prevent people getting confused and reporting it and stuff. Its not the most commonly used word on this forum and so I don't think it will hinder conversation too much really. I guess its just a case of different people perceiving it in different ways and unfortunately some people see it as too similar.

Its always handy to discuss the filter though so any suggestions will of course be discussed with the moderation team and their opinions will be taken on board etc too. For the time being though based on their feedback this word is better off filtered and I'm mainly sorry to Richie since he is the main one who uses it!

If the filter is avoided in a post to use the meaning gommeinc is talking about, rather than the vernacular expletive version - e.g. "Chris is a fec.kless idiot and should be fired" - would the post still be edited for "avoiding the filter"? @Martin;

That example would be edited for being rude.

****less is a completely different meaning isnt it? Not even sounding similar to another swearword etc. Unfortunately the filter does mean that some words have the first half chopped off etc where part of the word is a filtered word in itself. It doesnt happen very often though luckily. You are still manually overiding the filter though by putting a dot in though regardless but providing you arent doing it in a way to deliberately say something which would be unnacepable then it should be ok? Luckily its not a word that crops up too often. :P

What about if it is directed to someone outside the realms of the forum? For example, if Boris Johnson does something stupid and is called fec.kless? Sometimes you can avoid the filter if it's in true form in the same way you can say "Tom, Di.ck and Harry" because it's not offensive and quite a well used phrase. Although special provisions might be in place for Di.ck as it seems to be used in its actual form these days.

But surely if the full word doesn't belong in the filter and it's being used in the right context then it's okay to add a dot, space, comma, apostrophe or whatever? It doesn't harm anybody and makes the post look a lot tidier and more understandable than one full of "****". Besides, "****less" could have all sorts of other meanings.

****less would be fine imo but if the filter cuts it off due to other reasons then theres not much that can be done about it.

To be fair, f.eckless isn't the filtered word, but the word f.eck, which people are apparently using to say the similar looking F word. These people should be laughed at for being so desperate :P

I'm going to start calling people quiffs instead of using the W word, just because I feel compelled to look silly (I won't, even though quiff is an amazing word).

so is f.eck filtered too? because they say it on the radio here all the time, during the day and it's perfectly acceptable. there's another one 'cus i know that @pasta is always shocked when they say it, but i don't know what it is.

F.eck has been filtered for a while I think. And f.ecking has been added because of how people are using it.

Martin said I'm like one of the only ones who say it so I'm assuming this is directed at me. I don't structure a post and then decide I might just change fu.cking to fec.king to be cool. It's more so a habbit of just saying fec.king in general.

Ah you know what people are like on here, they'll do anything to get someone in trouble :P Not too fussed if they filter it, if anything it might stop me from typing it 'cause I usually remove the big ugly stars anyway as it just makes a post look messy.
