I have been sent an e-mail from UCAS about an NUS extra card for £12.
Just wanted to know has someone got one or had one; Is it worth the £12 or just another government scam to get more money from us.

Probably not worth it. A lot of these things just make use of your student discount which you can obviously make use of yourself at any time by just asking if they have a student discount when you're paying at the till. You'd be surprised how many places do offer money off for students (they just don't ask if you're a student at most places because they don't want to lose money obviously).
One thing which is worth investing in is a student rail card (if you're at uni away from home). Even if you're only commuting back and forth once a month or less you still quickly make back the cost of the card in discounted fares.
I'm pretty sure the NUS is entirely separate from the government: as the name suggests, it's a National Union of Students (and their disapproval of current practice was made clear turing the Tuition Fee protests). It's well worth it in my opinion, as you'll probably end up saving a lot more than £12 over the year. Take a look at the list of discounts to see if it will be worth it for you, but I also used it as a form of student ID at rugby matches, so I generally ended up saving about £5 a week that way too. Perhaps LoveToStack has been lucky, but they've always asked to see my NUS card in shops when at the till. I'd recommend getting it! :)
Agreed on the Student Railcard though... mine arrived the other day! I pretty much make my money back after the first couple of trips.
Omg it is so worth the £12 a year, i've got my card through andive already started saving loads, great thing to have
I see your point of view, but working in retail since I was 16, I have came to learn that when people say is there a student discount, the cashier never really knows so they just say no. With a card it might be easier?
Oh a Railcard, I forgot about that, I guess I would only use the train to get back and forth to home and uni on holidays, like Christmas, I will look into it! :) Rep+
Indeed it is, but you can never be to sure ;)! ohh nice link thanks for that. Indeed I'm going to buy one tbh, its only £12 for the whole year, it could prove beneficial, specially on the days I be skint! I will invest in a railcard. Rep+
Thanks for the feedback! :) Rep+ - Wont let me rep you :(
Your university ID card is an NUS card which will get you some discounts but extra gives you other things on top, like free chips/mcflurry etc. I use mine to pay for my Spotify subscription, I always paid for unlimited but they charge the same price (5 quid) for Premium with an Extra card. Not the MOST useful thing in the world as Uni ID does get you some discounts, but I've definitely got my money's worth.
Here's a list of all the extra discounts you get if you haven't looked it up already :)

Definitely get one I saved loads over the year. For example in january I bought a macbook pro to take to uni with me and saved £150 on it. I've probably saved about £500 over the course of the year. Also when you're tying to get student discount in shops a lot of them still want to actually see your NUS card or they won't give you the discount.
I'd say it probably isn't worth it. The companies that opt-in to the NUS card discount offers usually have products that you can get elsewhere, but cheaper (even with a card). But for the sake of £12 + know you can't live without McDonalds or something, depending on how much you use the card will depend if the savings surpass £12.
The McDonalds stuff you get with ANY student card even if you just make one yourself, and that's the only deal that matters obv
I've got one and I think it's definitely worth the £12. But that's because I shop at most of the places they offer discounts.
I got mine on Feb 29th for half price through the leap year promo thing and I used it a lot. iIs especially worth it if you do a lot of online shopping on sites like asos etc
I use my student ID card for discounts in shops etc. - I don't really see the point in getting a NUS card.
Worth it for me, saved me £60 for a year spotify premium.
I got mine sent the other day, I would say it's only really worth it if you do alot of online shopping also pizza express and places like that accept it so it's good if you go out for meals alot aswell i guess.
i'd say it was good if u use asos quite a lot. i know a lot of people at my sixth form got one because we didn't have student cards there. but if you're at uni, no point.
also yes the mcdonalds perk is the best perk eva
i think it's worth it, seeming as most shops I go into won't accept my uni card for discount and £12 is not much considering the sheer amount of shops that accept it as discount. Especially amazon.
no because everywhere either accepts my uni card or you can use myunidays for online discount
Its lay like a tenner, pretty sure within the year or whatever ever you can make it back
