Book Discussion/Challenge 2015

Hellooo, okay for 2015 I actually want to get properly back into reading and books (was going to in 2014 but no motivation whatsoever) so I've set myself a small challenge of 12 books in a year. I've also put it onto the Reading Challenge thing that Goodreads do (thank you for the 2014 thread shar) and the link is here for 2015 https://www.goodreads.com/challenges...ding-challenge.

SO I think it'd be cool if some of us can get together and

A) Set your own 2015 personal targets and whatnot for how many books you're going to read etc.
B) Discuss our progress in this thread yeahh???
C) List some of the books we're gonna read.

Yeah it's not that great an idea but this forum doesn't get an excessive amount of activity so it'd be nice to add to it.

For 2015 I reallyyyy want to read a Stephen King book, I've been thinking about Carrie or The Shining but I'm not sure which one to go forrr. I started reading IT years ago but I got scared really easily back then :/. Also I might check out Looking For Alaska as I know that's quite a hyped one and I've wanted to read something by John Green for a while now

omg i remember last year's thread lmao i read like ten books TOTAL what a **** disaster

Okay but currently I am reading:

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (couldn't finish last bits)
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie (supposedly Agatha's best. If you're into crime novels do read this one it's pretty good)

Hopefully I will finish both at the end of next week. Will keep updating okay this is cool please don't let this thread die!

if you want to read something stephen king i recommend 1408, although it's only a short story.

I'm going to try and do these in 2015:

• Finish the first book in The Mortal Instruments series. Which is going to be hard because that book is so ******* slow, I've tried to read it twice, once in Year 8 and once in 2014.
• Finish reading Paper Towns & An Abundance of Katherines by John Green
• Finish reading The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt
• Finish reading Palace of the Damned and start Brothers to the Death by Darren Shan
• Start Specials by Scott Westerfeld
• Possibly reread The Hunger Games/Divergent/Delirium trilogy's

So that's basically read 16 books :')
Also Looking for Alaska is my favourite John Green book by far

@Abi; Specials was really good but left me brokenhearted! Have you heard of Extras? It's the same world as Tally and David's world but a few years on and from the perspective of someone else. I would recommend it as it was nowhere near as good as the Uglies trilogy!

And @Intersocial; I can recommend some different books if you're stuck on what to read :) If you want to read something by Stephen King but you're not really into scary stuff, I'll suggest The Enemy by Charlie Higson. I heard him talk about writing but it's young adult horror rather so not as full on as Stephen King.

If you want to read a John Green book go for Looking for Alaska or Paper Towns, not The Fault in our Stars. Most people love TFioS but I thought it was overrated tbh :(

Also you must must MUST go for at least one classic if you want to read! (Honestly, sometimes I get asked what I'm reading in interviews and I look so fantastic if I can chat about Jane Austen.) Although I can see Jane Austen might not be your kind of thing so I'll recommend Frankenstein or The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. AND if you read Frankenstein, go on to read Mister Creecher by Chris Priestly - it adds to it really nicely.

And have you read any Terry Pratchett before?

Yeah I've already seen Tfios film (I know the book will have more in it!!!!!!1!) so I think that's kinda ruined any prospect of me reading the book as I know the major events :P Heard a lot of rave over Looking For Alaska so I will probably stick to that one.

Quickly browsing the first book disc that sounds like a really weird book series Charlie LOL. I might give it a look but ''extreme'' fantasy isn't really my forte

Yeah I've heard of Extras! I just need to wait until the season starts again and I get my job back so I can actually buy the books :')

and Terry Pratchett is my mum and dads favourite author, we've got every single book of his and every single game released that's set in discworld :')

We've got between 1-1.5 thousand books in my house and I've got about 150 in my room at the moment, gotta love reading :P

made it to 84 last year lmao this year my target is 104 (2 per week) this year, although I've cheated a bit since I'm beginning with anna kerinina which I got half way through but never got a chance to finish. hoping to read some other (translated to english) russian classics by dostoyevsky and tolstoy within the next few weeks while I procrastinate from revision since my uni library has dedicated aisles of shelves for each. definitely need to read We as well, I found an ebook version but seem to have lost it now.

lisey's story is a good stephen king book @Intersocial; it's not much like his others but still has a psychological element.

I've got john green will grayson, will grayson and francine rivers her mother's hope and her daughter's dream. I'll aim to have them done by January.

Ah there are so many books I have that I still haven't read.
I've really lacked the motivation.

I'm more of a Vic lit person myself - when I get a list prepared and goals I'll let you know. ;D

Last year I think I was too ambitious considering I'm too busy to read most of the time so this year my goal is 50 books.

My goal is around 50 for this year, last year I read 63 but I'm in my last year of A-levels so I won't really have time to read much. I've already read we were liars by E. Lockhart and I think it is my new favourite book I recommended it to everyone it's so good

I started reading The Maze Runner, I'm about 3 chapters in and it's pretty good so far. Some of the books I know I want to read are the Mara Dyer series, the infernal devices series, under the dome by Stephen King, to kill a mockingbird and I want to re-read the mortal instruments series. No idea when I'm gonna have time to read them though

Went to get looking for alaska fro central library (long shot but it is a relatively big library), all copies out atm but they /reckon/ I can get on by Wednesday soo here's hoping.

For time being browsed around the Stephen King books, couldn't find 1408 or Lisey's story though :( They only have about 12 of his books, but I did find Carrie so I grabbed that. About 50 or so pages in (had a long bus journey...) but hey I'm really gripped already :¬:

@Intersocial; I recommend '11/22/63' for a Stephen King book.

I've just finished reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn a few days ago (gonna check out the film too). Might read The Cuckoo's Calling or The Rosie Project next. I also want to read at least one Neil Gaiman book soon!

Ikrrr, probably gonna have to buy them full/new price though. Not sure how I go about asking the library to get certain books but I might do that. OR i'll just go to waterstones see if they have either one.

I finished Carrie after about 24 hours I was so gripped to it, really good book tbh fully recommend it. I knew the vague start and ending of the book (from film trailer) so was astonished to see how there was gonna be 200 or so pages build up but hey he did it well. When I go to bookstore I will have a look for the Stephen king ones mentioned here and decide which I wanna purchase!!!

Of course! Sadly the list is temporarily lost due to my laptop screen breaking though :(

I finished Анн* К*ренин* earlier today while I waited for my beef stew to cook so need to find myself something new to read over the next few days to stay on target. Find me a mobile compatible ebook version of WE somebody otherwise I have to go all the way up the library steps tomorrow ugh

I'm struggling to work out which book it was you finished today lmao. Could you link me the list when you get your laptop sorted, looking to build my book collection and could use some inspiration

started reading catcher in the rye, don't like it till now tbh

@Intersocial; I don't know how your local library system works but you should be able to request books online and they'll contact you when they can get it in.

I'm on a grand total of 4 this year hopefully I can do a bit more reading once exams are over next week.

- Anna karenina ~ leo tolstoy
- dr zhivago - Boris pasternak
- the adventures of dr Doolittle - Hugh lofting (it's a collection of short stories but I'll count it anyway!!)
- psycho ~ Robert Bloch. Read it before but got me excited for the new bates motel season comin up

I also found a quaint little book about flat sharing called "I lick my cheese" by oonagh ohagen but it was largely pictures of notes left in flats with paragraphs of comments beside each.

I got 5 Douglas Adams books (hit hikers guide, meaning of life, so long & thanks, etc) from eBay so shall be reading them when they arrive yay

Should have that list from last year by next week !

I read the Maze Runner and I'm currently reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac, I think that's 3 so far this year

I've read none so far - which technically is an achievement considering that I've decided to shift my attention to TV shows and cinematography.

I finished "Looking For Alaska" yesterday! Took me a while to do it because I just had no motivation to read woops, but seem to have got that motivation back :P

Really good book, fully recommend it to anyone tbh :}

I didn't actually realise what the "__ days before" and "___ days after" was leading towards, I assumed it would be a new romantic relationship and that the actual thing that happened wouldn't be till the end :(!!!!

4/12 so far and I imagine I will finish Nausea fairly soon, I'm completely engrossed in the book.

I also cannot recommend Now I See You: A Memoir enough. A few hilarious moments and just an all round down-to-earth, captivating book :)
