I did the same a while ago, it's nice having a computer that just works after dealing with fixing everyone else's all day - I can never decide between my macbook pro and my surface 2 when at home :P
Reeder is a personal favorite of mine for documents, and VLC still tops my list on both platforms for a media player. Growl is nice if you want phone-style notifications on your laptop, but I grabbed it while it was free - I think they charge a small amount now.
