69 years on the throne
Queen Elizabeth II has now been reigning as British and Commonwealth monarch for 69 years
Today marks 69 years since King George VI passed away in his sleep at Sandringham House, as his daughter Princess Elizabeth was abroad in Kenya Colony, being informed she was now Queen of Britain, the Commonwealth and the British Empire. She was only 27 years old when she became monarch.#Onthisday in 1952, The Queen acceded to the throne on the death of her father King George VI. Her Majesty has now been Sovereign for 69 years.

Next year she'll reach the milestone of 70 years on the throne, a Platinum Jubilee. Large public events are planned across the Commonwealth realms.
