    The Dare

The dark green bottle swung round, round and round. I was hoping it wouldn’t land on me but somehow I knew it would it’s my luck I never ever have good look. I closed my eyes.
“Joanne it’s landed on you!” Rachel told me. I knew it, no matter how much I wished, it had landed on me.
“I dare you to light a firework in your garden.” Said Rachel. I knew this was dangerous but could I really look like a wimp in front of all of these cool people? No. I had to do it.
“All right then.” I replied trying to look brave. I didn’t want to do this, but I had to, I had finally become mates with some of the cool older people and I knew I couldn’t look like a wimp in front of them.
I stood up slowly, I was shaking – a bag of nerves. What would my mom say? What about my dad? If they knew I’d be in deep trouble, but they won’t find out what harm will a little rocket do? I walked down the stairs breaking out in a cold sweat. Gulping with each step I took. I wanted the floor to swallow me up there was no way I could get out of this. It’ll be so dangerous but I can’t say no now.
I walked towards the garden shed where our fireworks were kept for bonfire night. I had no idea which was which let alone fully set one off for a dare. I grabbed a big red one. It was shaped like a rocket so I assumed it was one. Everything seemed fine, it wasn’t damp and the firework wasn’t damaged.
“Come on Joanne! Hurry up with that firework!” Shouted Jason, they were egging me on now Chanting “Jo-anne, Jo-anne!” constantly in a familier tune. I made sure the ground wasn’t wet and pushed the end of the stick on the firework into the ground with a bit of force.
I took out a match and struck the match box with a lot of force. I seemed to take my anger – fuelled by my stupidity, out on the match box. The match didn’t light. I took out another match and struck the match box again. The match finally caught fire, the flame a bright yellow colour burning brightly.
“Get on with it Joanne!” Complained Jason again. I put the lit match to the end of the firework by the stick. I watched it catch alight, taking a step back I realised how stupid I was. The firework let out an ear screeching scream. Nothing was happening apart from the weird sound. What had happened?
I took a step forwards to check the firework. Suddenly, it let off some sparks. Brightly coloured blasts of light shot up, I tried to dodge them but I couldn’t. One of them sank into my arm I immediately felt the heat of it burning my skin, the hairs on my arm being singed.
I let out a huge yelp of pain.
“Woah! Joanne move the hell out of the way!” Screamed Rachel in horror. I dived onto the patio scratching my leg but I knew that I would rather have a little scratch than anymore firework burns. It felt like my arm was on fire and I couldn’t do anything about it. Jason & Rachel & everyone else ran over to me. They asked if I was alright. I didn’t reply. I was so angry at myself for doing what they said. They weren’t cool, they just forced people to do stuff for the sake of them having fun.
I told them I was fine, and told them to go home. I didn’t want them here with me. I stunk like an ashtray and had a gigantic, Bulging blister on my arm from where the spark had landed. As soon as they were gone I ran up to the bath room and put an ice cold cloth on my blister. It was horrid but the coldness of the cloth calmed it down. It was so soothing like a gust of wind on a hot and muggy day. I ran downstairs into the garden and picked up the firework. It was still hot and had smoke coming from it but I had to get rid of it so I picked it up and put it in the bin. I now know that I was stupid, I shouldn’t have listened to them and accepted that dare, because I did I have a scar on my arm that will never ever go away.
