    What size is the best to use to make layouts etc???

    780 x 800. The hieght dowsn't really matter to be honest.

    You don't need to have it 800x600 as if you have less width, it allows for you to have the scroll bar on a 800x600 screen, and it also allows you to see some of the background too.
