    Default Carlisle sign Smith

26 year old midfielder Jeff Smith has joined United from Port Vale on a two and a half year contract this afternoon, for a £60,000 fee.

Middlesbrough born Smith started his career with non-league Bishop Auckland before being quickly snapped up by Bolton Wanderers in 2000. 4 years at the Reebok saw first team opportunities limited, but he enjoyed fruitful loan spells with Macclesfield, Rochdale and Preston prior to his summer 2004 switch to the Valiants.

Smith has made a total of 103 appearances at Vale Park in his 3 years there, scoring 7 goals, including the second in their 3-2 defeat at Brunton Park earlier this season.

He will team up with the Cumbrians tomorrow morning for his first trainig session and goes straight into the squad for the trip to Brentford on Saturday.
