    I've always wondered this.

Google doesn't give me a decent enough answer.

The statue is made of pure copper on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf.

yes, the french gave it to them as a sign of friendship or something. if it was made of copper, does it mean that it used to be redish brown way back in the past? before it turns greenish, that is. and i always thought it was stone though.
