    Default PHP4 or PHP5?

    Hey,

I was wondering if I should stick to PHP4 or move to PHP5 completely. Just wondering what you guys think and if you have support for PHP5 on your server?

PHP5 comes with alot of extra features (SimpleXML, Better OOP, etc.) that lets PHP4 down. Also PHP5 will be discontinued at the end of this year.

Please vote and post comments below ;D

To mods: Don't even bother moving it to the coding section because I want feedback about the support as well ''/

    Thanks,

    Tom

Well ive always used PHP 4 on my server, partly because when i upgraded to php5 i some how managed to break php all together, so i went back to 4 and never tried going back to 5 again.

The only way you can have support for both is have two different versions or just use PHP4 lol :p

Most of the pro open-source coders will move onto PHP5 from Feb 2008*. So code it in PHP4 from now.

*Source from SitePoint, not the exact works

I suggest that you install PHP 4 and PHP 5 side-by-side. All you need to do is have PHP4 running as default, and then set up a handler in a HTACCESS to make it run .php5 files with the PHP5 engine. If you need the HTACCESS to do this, ask me on MSN

i use php5, just as i like the better oop features it brings. Other than some exstra stuff though theres VERY little difference between them, i was able to move thybag in its entirety from php4 to 5 with only a few incredibly minor edits and on most parts none at all.
Becuse php5 has everything of 4 pretty much and more, it seems kinda pointless keeping 4 around, apparnly php4 is still installed on the server i use in addition to 5 but i see no reason to revert "/
