Most of that's down the range armour having a greater defence bonus against magic than chain/plate armour.
It depends who you're against, the warriors can easily take rangers and mages, but mages are better off because they can hit against a warrior harder than a ranger can, but they're both pretty low on melee defence, a ranger has a hard time against warriors because the range defence on a warrior is higher than range defence of robes
It depends on what you're going fight against, I think it's best to be range/mage because then you can take on alot of different styles
