    Default Religion in schools

I'm not sure if this topic has previously been covered in this forum, but I was just curious as to what everyone's opinions on religion in schools are.

Are any of you continuously bombarded with religious stories/hymns/prayers in assembly, for example?

How do people feel about parents getting their children baptised for the sole reason of increasing the possibility of them being admitted into a Roman Catholic school (as has been recently reported)?

Do you think religion has ANY place in education, or is it indoctrination of the young and innocent? (Umm, hope I don't sound biased.)

If its taught properly in terms of a general overview of what religion is and what different religions teach and celebrate, sure that's fine. I have no problem with facts being discussed.
Other than that, religions an individual choice, which has nothing to do with education's so im all for removing the rest of the crap.
(Ive never ever met someone from a catholic school whos actually been religious? They just resent the church more than the average athiest would do, so the indoctrinations pretty poor. Possibly due to the ignorance of the religion itself expressed by the teachers in them. Its hilarious how many catholic schools ban the word xmas, despite the fact its more "Christian" than the word Christmas itself being closer to the direct latin roots of the story)

If it's taught rather than preached it's really good, because you can get some excellent discussions out of it. You always get some people who will just be like "NO THERE IS NO GOD I HATE THE BIBLE" but if you ignore idiots then class discussion can be lots of fun. It really does amuse me how some people say that there can't be a god because of some Biblical flaw, entirely skipping past the idea that just possibly there's more than one religion.

As Mentor said, it's ok to be told and discuss the facts about religions with what they do, celebrate and believe in. Hymns are OK, prayers are just a way of passing on goals and thoughts for the day and bible stories are just there to make people sleepy most of the time. I don't believe my school bombarded people with anything, it was sort of open except they didn't like rudeness etc. RS was just basic facts and morning assemblies were there to give people infromation on what's happening at the school that week, that day and possibly that month, with a few hymns to fill in the time. I don't think we had prayers or bible readings, Mentor may know :S

I think school is to learn academics, not religion. But, I don't really care. I used to go to a Christian school, it was fine, never really any religion.
