I hate it, the nav is awful, I hate the banner, the background image's inner border stops and isn't as wide.

You've did it wrong. Use Google.
I don't see why you just didn't make the link images transparent then add them in using <img src="blah.png"><a href="blah.html">blah</a>
Or just add the image in..
