Default ATI Radeon Problem (Think driver related)

Ok, heres the story: I got a free computer of my uncle, i then reinstalled the OS, i fogot i didn't have the disc for the gfx card. (There is NO way i can get that card at all to this current moment unless i get a torrent rip of the disc). I turn computer on and the GFX card is using vga.dll as a driver. I go to AMD site and download the Radeon 9200 drivers (which is what card is). I install it, restart computer, and everything is in 600x400 screen resolution and 16 colour mode, i can't change this either because it won't let me.

    This is what i mean:

I've uninstalled driver and it's gone back to vga.dll

Any ideas on what i can do?

    +rep to help

    Thanks
    Luke

I had this problem long long ago with an Nvidia card, I reinstalled Windows as it was a brand new install and I couldn't loose anything.

i've reinstalled windows actually 2 times BEFORE this OS, i had same problem just didn't post cause it was vista didn't think it would be compatible, then after it was XP, but it was home edition.

Now i've got XP profesional and once again same result.
Haven't a clue what to do as it HAS worked before, but that was with different motherboard.

I replaced the AMD with an Intel before i reinstalled OS.
But ATi should work with Intel shouldn't it..

    Yes it should.

Get Driver Cleaner, clear the ATi drivers and try reinstalling them

You sure it won't let you change it, even through the Properties -> Settings -> Display, then from 16 -> 32?

This happened to me, and it let me.. hmm.
