Default Using tumblr on custom domain?

On tumblr in order to put your blog on your page you need to set your domain's A-Record to a certain IP. (http://www.tumblr.com/help/custom_domains) Is there a way to get tumblr on your domain without using A-Recorf?

Best option would be a redirect, you could always register a sub-domain tumblr side then create a custom DNS entry for that subdomain to root to their IP or w/e?

Why don't people just attach it to their tumblr rather than making it redirect? :S
