    Can someone give me the lowdown on how this works and what I need to use it?

    You need a microphone and speakers/headphones. It uses VoIP technology. Can ring other uses and if you pay you can ring proper phone numbers like landlines etc etc.
    This is our situation and we're happy to be here,
    I wouldn't change this place for anything.

    Skype is very similar to MSN which I'm sure you're familiar with. You have a contact list and can chat to them with text, ring them with a microphone or go on webcam to them as well to do a video call. The thing which sets it apart is that it's free and you only have to pay a small price to call any landlines throughout the world.

    It's owned by eBay and uses VoIP (Voice over IP) technology.

    Thought I would add that I tend to find it's much better quality than MSN.
    This is our situation and we're happy to be here,
    I wouldn't change this place for anything.

    Any idea how I can stop the echoing?

    I call a friend and when I speak I can hear myself after I've said something.....

    I find that it only echo's if the other persons speakers are up too loud, try giving the Skype Test Call a call and see if it echos - if it does, then its your mic.

    If you want a chat someday, ill probably be up for it Give me a PM lol
