It confused me for a bit too, then I realised it's like one big sms/texting conversation (except i'm doing it on the site, chatroom style)
You basically just say what you're doing. Random updates to your life.
You can find famous people who have twitter and 'follow' them, that's REALLY interesting. Stephen Fry (don't know if you'd know him, everyone should but... british comedian guy, brilliant) has one, I discovered today. Lots of websites and webcomics I like also have them.

Twitter used to be unsafe becuase they had no capcha which enabled you to dictionary attack accounts.
They even managed to get Barack Obama's Twitter I think the password was 'happiness'..
