Default Tiredness, motivation & sleep +7REP

    Heyy.

I'm having a few problems motivating myself to do stuff at the moment, particularly with college and it's starting to become an issue and i'd like to hit it on the head before I start failing exams or anything serious.

I currently go to bed around midnight and wake up at about 8am. Sometimes I don't get straight to sleep but most of the time I do.

However during the day I am always really tired. I'll come home from college during my breaks and just fall asleep, and like now I am so tired i've got no energy or motivation to do any of my work.

It's fair enough saying try to go to bed earlier, but I already get 7-8 hours sleep and usually if I go to bed before midnight(ish) I can't sleep for a few hours anyway and I refuse to lay in bed for hours doing nothing.

I have quite a bit of work to do tonight but atm I just cannot be bothered and I know if I start it it won't get finished.

    Helppp?

Go to bed earlier for a start. Just be in bed by half 10 or 11 - there's no point saying you can't because clearly you aren't getting anything done anyway.
When you're working do it away from the computer or the TV because they will distract you. Just pap on some music as well and that helps pass the time but it shouldn't affect your concentration.
Remember that this is your life, it's your responsibility to make things happen. You can say that you too tired to work or that it's health related but just push through and get the work done. You know you'll feel much better knowing it's out of the way. People don't get good grades without trying, no matter what they tell you. Try now because the time has come where it actually matters.

tl;dr? - Just suck it up and do it.

I'm not really active in the day no, I do walk about 4 miles 2 of which is up quite a steep hill but I wouldn't class that as active.

I don't eat as much fruit or veg as I could nor do I take any vitamin supppliments.

Matt, remind me to +Rep you tomorrow (if i can)

    Hello Oliver,

I had a similar problem at a certain point. I did a few things to sort that out. Your problem could be that you're not getting into a deep enough sleep, even though are sleeping for a good amount of time. In order to get into a deep sleep, you could try several things and stop several things:

    • EXERCISE is the key one and my favourite. Go for a run, do a few press ups, go for a bike ride - whatever floats ya boat. Tiring yourself out by exercise almost guarantees a nice long sleep.
    • READ before you go to bed.
    • Make sure your bed space is comfortable and not too cold, not too hot. Make sure your head has good support on pillows and your mattress does not have any broken springs etc.
    • Get rid of any visible clocks in your room or cover them while you're sleeping. Put your mobile, ipod, laptop w/e out of the way as this prevents distraction.
    • Jumping straight off the computer, stopping watching the tv or w/e and just getting straight into bed won't help. Give yourself at least half an hour if not more to wind down before bed. You could tie this in with reading or taking a relaxing bath or a walk.
    • Don't drink tea, coffee or smoke like an hour before bed. Won't help.
    • Try not to eat a within a couple of hours before going to bed, again this won't help.
    • Relax. If you don't sleep well it won't just be that it sorts itself out in one go. If you can't sleep, don't be impatient and get up and go watch tv or whatever, just lie there and unwind. If it is proving to be a problem simply get up and read again for half an hour or so. Then try again.

Lots of others things you can try too.

Over the weekend if you have nothing on, try exhaust yourself by staying up over night and the rest of the day (you can take pills for it like Pro Plus if you like, it will keep you awake and help exhaust you), but don't do anything which could be excessively tiring. Then go to bed at your usual time, this will give your body the chance reset its sleeping cycle and get enough sleep for you to wake up refreshed. If you don't feel any better you should try doing it again but don't try it a third time. Just to suggest, you could have a little bout of Insomnia or Depression (not serious, just feeling like your lacking in energy and feeling stressed, you usually get over it after a few days/weeks). I've had it quite a few times and what I suggested got me out of it, but since everyone's different .

Personally I think attempting to stay awake for a long period of time is a terrible idea. What you should do is establish a fixed sleeping pattern that you stick to weekday and weekend. By staying up for long periods of time you are mucking with your body clock which could have a negative impact on your sleep later in the week.
However it's up to you as apparently it's worked for you, but I would suggest that it is a bad idea.
