Default synthetic vs. real hair wigs?

we're wearing synthetic wigs for dance this year...
    they look like this...

can it cause damage to your scalp? we're wearing tight wig caps under so thats why I ask...and also, why do they make them out of plastic of all things? we had to style ours today and it gets tough without heat ;l

I was also just wondering what you guys think of synthetic wigs vs. real hair wigs, and which you like better :]

i think if you wear a headcap, it'll protect your hair from damaging or anything like that.

With the cap you should be fine, unless you're somehow allergic to whatever it's made of in which case you'll be making everything worse, but I'd imagine they're made fairly safe.

As for real vs synthetic, obviously real hair looks better and probably feels better if you're really needing one, but for one-offs and performances a synthetic one should be fine - if they're horrifically cheap you could even make a show of it by having them as hideous as possible
