Not really gonna happen unless you're willing to go with ebay.

RAM is expensive at the moment.

Could try ebuyer / amazon as they are normally quite cheap on computers and electronics. Also ebay as above said

I say eBay. Just got 2 x 256Mb sticks of DDR 400 RAM for £2.50. (INCLUDING POSTAGE )

There were some job lots of loads of RAM sticks for around £15, may be worth a look.

A manufacturer went bankrupt early last year causing a big shortage, hence the prices more than doubling.

    Which manufacturer?
Never argue with an idiot, he'll drag you down to his level, and beat you with experience.

    A german company called Qimonda.
You'd think the likes of Crucial and Kingston would have enough supply going, but apparently not?

Got a 1GB stick for just under £10 from eBuyer once, doesn't look like it's still there.

I would have thought they'd be making their own RAM. I suppose all good things come to an end.

Lol, companys like Crucial and Kingston don't actually manufacture the chips.

There is/was only something like 3 big companies that made most of the chips. Quimonda was the second largest chip manufacturer.
