Default Digital Economy Bill likely to become law

Yeah it was passed in Lords either today or yesterday night, and it's probably going to get a Royal ascent so that they can shift it through asap. For anyone who doesnt know what the Digital Economy Bill is, it's basically a bill which protects huge companies & threatens users who download illegally, with permenant disconnection.

Not only does it threaten those users though, but the innocent ones who have insecure wifi signals will get punished if others are downloading on their wifi network (possibly the end of free wifi in cafés? I think so). It's pretty much the worst day in the history for the Internet and freedom of speech. The bill even suggests that it be allowed for the internet to be filtered by the government, though it was amended slightly so there has to be a thorough debate about why it should be filtered... Leaves alot of room for the imagination of stupid parliament members.

So yeah, bad news... if anyone knows a bit more than I do, go ahead and input, but I'm sure what I've said is all true.

Kinda stupid, it is basically free advertisement for the music person as if they like their songs they will go and see their concert and buy other merchandise (possibly).

Some replies can be found here regarding this bill.

Anyway, the bill is stupid. It is not set out correctly and is just going to ruin our usage of internet. WELL DONE GOVERNMENT!

I watched some live thing before and in some part of the bill it mentions "Service Providers" and this person did his research on this and spoke tons about how "Service Providers" means many things, when the word should of been "Internet Service Providers". They have rushed this too fast and it needed to be debated proper!

So true. None of them know anything about the internet or technology. The only ones who do know are probably those who voted no. I mean fgs like 400 MPs didnt turn up to the vote? there was a mashed up look at it, lots of twitter users disapprove of it... It should be getting the media attention it deserves.

    This fact makes me laugh:

In 24 hours, the hashtag #debill appeared 14,400 times on Twitter, as compared to 1,470 tweets using the election hashtag #ge2010.

The country is going down the pan, prisons are full to the brim and including the courts as well yet the government is determined to go after people who are causing no harm - typical of a left wing Labour government, no room in prison for thieves or thugs but plenty for old ladies who refuse to pay their council tax. I'm not suprised as usual.
