Such a low budget really does limit you quite a lot... an older Focus diesel 1.8 would be a safe bet because they are thoroughly decent cars. Or an older Astra with the 1.7 CDTi

GET A HONDA & YOU WILL LOVE HONDA 4 LIFE
I'm at a point in my life where I don't care if you like me or you don't. If you like me, cool. If you don't, meh.

Yeah get a Honda or just a Corsa or Fiesta or something. Your 306 broke because it's French.

It really depends on what 'something decent' means to you, 1-1.5k may seem like a limited budget but you could actually do quite well for it if you're sensible.
If it's only temporary then why not have some fun? If you like 306s you could probably stretch to a Dturbo for that kinda money. If not, just get something cheap to get you from A to B, a 1.2 Punto or something like that, I've bought and sold a few and I have to say they're nice little cars.

well i wouldn't say i was well off or anything so decent to me isn't much, for example my current 306 is mint bodywork and 99% mint inside too and is the highest spec made of them. Got that for a grand. Only issue is the engine atm. Toying with the idea of taking it to an autoelectrician cos as it's french chances are it's electrical and thats a much cheaper option cos i really like this car lol :p but if i was to get another i'd be looking at a higher mileage hdi or dturbo 306 maybe, if i had more money i'd get a fiesta zetec s
