Default Is this a software or hardware problem?

I have bought the kanex XD which allows me to connect my games consoles to my mac, however it only works on 720p. This is what kanex says:

*The reason you must set the resolution to 720p and not 1080p is due to the fact that the iMac's EDID is set to only accept two input resolutions which are: 2560x1440 and 1280x720. Therefore, if your source is not set to 720p then your iMac will reject the display as it is not compatible with the EDID that is configured on the system.
So the mac is actually capable of playing movies etc in 1080p but when it comes to connecting things, it's limited to 720p. So is this due to hardware limitations or software limitations? At least then I might one day see a software update that sorts this out. Might sound like a silly question but in my mind, I see a display that is capable of playing 1080p HD but then when you connect things up to it that also work in 1080p, it isn't compatible (which I find really confusing). Thanks!

    TROLOLOLOL.

    Yes, you got trololol'd

I'd say it's a firmware issue if the screen can support 1080p, Apple are probably just holding it back again.

I had a feeling it was probably going to be software knowing Apple.

I wonder if anyone has ever hacked it to allow full 1080p to be supported in situations like this. The technology is obviously there but you just can't get to it. :@
