Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has been accused of hypocrisy after jetting off to California with his new girlfriend – just days after returning from a climate change summit in Mexico. Mr Huhne, who has called for a sharp increase in air taxes, spent Christmas in Los Angeles and San Francisco with Carina Trimingham. He is the latest member of the Government to have enjoyed a lavish break while claiming ‘we’re all in this together’.

Last week The Mail on Sunday disclosed that Chancellor George Osborne, who coined the phrase when calling for massive cuts to lift the country out of the red, spent the festive period in the exclusive ski resort, Klosters, while Tory Zac Goldsmith rented an £8,000-a-week Caribbean villa. Other MPs saw in the New Year sipping champagne during an exclusive fireworks party at the House of Commons. Anti-taxation campaigners criticised Mr Huhne for living the high-life while planning tax hikes which will make it harder for poorer families to fly.

Last night a spokesman for the Taxpayers’ Alliance said: ‘While politicians are leading the jet-set lifestyle, they are telling ordinary taxpayers to watch their carbon footprint. ‘The hikes in VAT, fuel duty and flight taxes will hit lower and middle-income families so hard they may have to scrap their summer holidays.’

Last year, Mr Huhne said he wanted to hammer motorists and air travellers with an extra £15billion in levies.In December, the Energy Secretary attended UN talks in Cancun which resolved to make deep cuts in carbon emissions. But within a fortnight of returning from the 10,000-mile round-trip on December 12, the 55-year-old and Ms Trimingham, 44, were making the 5,500-mile journey to Los Angeles. The pair then travelled to San Francisco before flying home.

Ms Trimmingham and Mr Huhne declined to comment.

Well this isn't suprising, the rich put taxes on the poor to make their own lives more comfortable.. yet don't follow their own logic. I think the term is 'Do as I say, not as I do' - following his own logic that we are all facing disaster from global warming climate change you'd think he would want to limit his own carbon footprint as much as possible and take a nice holiday in Britain, something a lot of people cant even afford these days thanks to ridiculous taxes put on almost everything by people like Chris Huhne.

There's been instances with the head of the UN's IPCC who was driven in a fuel guzzling car just around the block to attend a climate change summit - in other words, the worlds political elite fly around the world telling the rest of us not to fly.

It is very much indeed "do as i say, not what i do" with every politician in Britain at the moment.
Politicians need a connection with the people to gain trust and belief, flying around in a plane then telling us not to do the same thing certainly does not create a good atmosphere between the people and the politicians. When they realise this, politics in the UK might actually become interesting, not just a waste of time and effort. All great politicians create a bond with their countries people with their speeches, propaganda, ways of life, beliefs and acts.
These people are not above us, if they think they are then this country is never going to have a great leader and will continue to plummet.

He's the secretary of something that doesn't exist - man-made climate change. It's been almost a decade of global warming scare and after all the facts have bubbled to the surface and we can all agree it's just the Earth doing its natural cycle we're still facing this. Billions poured into something that doesn't exist, they pretty much should be burning all of the money they're spending as it won't go anywhere or leave any substantial impact on something that is nature's whim.

Nobody has said that.

He isn't a world leader and nobody said nor suggested he should walk.

What he shouldn't be doing is going to conferences in Mexico then flying to Britain THEN flying to California, when he's supposed to be oh so big on climate change and global warming. Mexico and Britain are roughly 5000 miles apart, Mexico and California are 500 MAX (depending on where, southern, northern etc).
From Mexico to Britain then from Britain to California is roughly 10,200 miles - why did he travel all that when he could have just stayed in Mexico for an extra few days (probably for a cheaper price than all the flights too), and just fly or drive to California from Mexico?
Absolute waste of money, no doubt paid by us, not to mention the pollution his travelling air-planes would have been pumping out and he's supposed to be our Energy Secretary.
THAT'S why people are calling him a hypocrite and that's why he has done wrong.

Pretty sure its just about cutting down on what you do, to make that extra difference. Not drastically changing your life so you walk everywhere and do 0 emissions. Don't be stupid.

Indeed, so Mr Huhne can surely take a holiday in the UK rather than the US - and when they have these climate conferences, they can start doing them via video conferencing can't they? or maybe not as that doesnt include the perks of 5-star hotels!
