It's not free. You can play the old, boring version for free here, but for the good version (beta) you have to pay €14.95. It is definitely worth it.
You can download it if you want, or you can play it on the minecraft website, although that's technically downloaded too.
There's so much that you can do on it, I suggest you just search minecraft on youtube and watch a bunch of videos. Make sure you're watching new videos though, there are lots of videos of the older version.

Whats so good about minecraft, im not 100% why my self and loads of other just love it, its just addictive and so fun to play. also its probably the fact that you can anything you want its a sandbox game.
    Is it free, no.
Is it worth the money (If you have to buy) yes, atm its about £12 but after beta is over it will be about £16-£17 so id get it now.
Do you have to download it. yes, i have just scanned it and its 100% clean if your wondering
What do you do on it. i'd say the possibility are endless! it depends what type of thiings you like doing, you can make structures, towns, art, explore its just endless like above i'd suggest watching loads of minecraft videos. I recommend 'SeaNanners' and 'Coestar'

PM me if you have any other questions, happy to help!

I suggest watching paulsoaresjr's videos too, especially his 'minecraft dad' ones where he plays multiplayer with his kids.

In this day and age when everything is about grpahics, plot and online capabilities is think its good to able to go back to a simple game where you can literally build what you want with no aim at all.

If anything, Minecraft is the greatest video-game story ever told because it tells no story at all; a sandbox with some tools. A clock without a craftsman. The player creates his own story.

For once you actually have to use your imagination, everything isn't handed to you on a silver plate with Minecraft.

Unless you cheat on multiplayer in secret to screw with your friends and build a giant 50x50 golden tower from the bedrock to the height limit using tnt in place of pickaxes....
