You don't, STEAM is a content delivery and community service, it's more like iTunes is to music than Xbox Live is to games.

It's like a combination. Basically, you make an account. Any games you buy on that account are on it, if you go somewhere, for example.. You can log onto your steam account, and install the game on that computer. You can also add friends, like on Xbox Live, and easily join your friend's games. I'm a Steam user, but I do have to admit, they're not the best sometimes. They update a lot, and your friends list goes down for maintenance a lot.

You're welcome. They just made Team Fortress 2 free to play, so if you get a Steam account you will be able to install that and get a general idea of what it will be like if you make a purchase. Just keep in mind, nobody from steam will ever ask for your password or information. People can mod chat to have blue/green text, and you can change your name whenever you want. A lot of people pose as a Steam admin and use the blue or green font to try to get you to "confirm" your account. Not saying you're dumb enough to fall for that, just a warning.

my opinion is that, you get Tf2 (team fortress 2) is free and play it and make some friends join a clan etc and if u get the hang oif it and tart to like it you should buy another game like Counter strike source or Half life 2 or whaever kind of games you like. in a way is like xbox live but better

Yeah, TF2 is probably a good entry into FPS games if you haven't played much. On the other hand, I think if you've played them before you won't enjoy TF2.
