if I plug them both in then the ssd doesn't get recognised but if I unplug my hdd then the ssd gets recognised

    What am I doing wrong?

Doesn't get recognized by bios/disk management?

Have you got AHCI mode enabled in BIOS?

Also what are you trying to do, have you installed OS on the SSD and trying to plug HDD in to get data off, or is SSD still empty?

Fairly sure you're always suggested to just add the SSD to get OS etc running then stick HDD in, not sure if that would cause problems recognizing the drive though
