    Default Falklands Referendum: Results

David Cameron today called on Argentina to respect the wishes of Falkland Islanders, who have overwhelmingly voted to stay British.

After two days of voting the inhabitants of the South Atlantic archipelago decided by 99.8 per cent in favour of retaining their status as a United Kingdom overseas territory. Turnout from the electorate of 1,649, some of whom had queued in wind and rain yesterday to cast their ballots in Stanley, was 92 per cent.

The Prime Minister said this was "the clearest possible results there could be" and that he would always be there to defend the islands.

Speaking at 10 Downing Street just hours after the result of the referendum was announced, Mr Cameron said it sent a clear message to Argentina.

"They should take careful note of this result," said the Prime Minister.

"The Falkland islanders couldn't have spoken more clearly. They want to remain British and that view should be respected by everybody, including by Argentina."

Argentina already said before this occurred that they wouldn't listen to the poll anyway but it was nice for them to do a referendum either way.

lol those people in the 0.2% must be feeling pretty lonely. even if they don't acknowledge it, it's still a nice two-fingered gesture to argentina anyway.

Possibly the most foreseen outcome ever The thing is, the people who voted "no" are not necessarily in favour of Argentine rule. The "no" vote could be for total independence from both countries, even though economically it would be a disaster.

Argentina would probably just invade them at some point if they went independent too.

The UN, US and most of Europe would go crazy! Then again, if that were to happen, a few well aimed shots at the Presidential Palace and Argentine Parliament ought to fix that country up

I think he means if the Falklands went independent and maybe also didn't have the UK defending it and no ships/army/air force based there. But yeah I get what you mean also

Why was this done when Argentina refused to recognize such referendum in the first place? Least intelligent approach to solve disputes.

The three votes against were from Guardian newspaper readers.

    Or the blind.
