A five-year-old girl was raped, battered, had a plastic bottle and candles shoved into her vagina and was left to die in a locked room in east Delhi by her 25-year-old neighbour before she was discovered two days later, lying in a pool of her own blood.

When her father went to the police for help, they gave him Rs. 2,000 to hush up the matter.

And when protesters gathered outside the hospital the girl was taken to, a senior police officer thought nothing of slapping a woman demonstrator.

Clearly, nothing has changed in rape capital Delhi, despite the public outrage and government assurances that followed the December 16 gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus and her subsequent death.

The little girl was playing near her rented house in Dilshad Garden last Sunday evening when she was abducted by Manoj, a tailor who doubles up as a labourer. For the next 72 hours, she was raped and brutalised over and over again in a room right below her own house, as her family searched desperately for her.

She was rescued from her dark prison on Wednesday, after her parents heard her feeble cries and called the police.

That was really difficult to read. How can anyone be so disgusting? Is he attracted, sexually, to young girls and a bit of a saddist , or just one of the two? It seems really unimaginable thinking what was running through his mind.

Can't believe the police tried to hush up the father. It must of been because the Delhi police do not want any more controversy, but adding to the scandal is not going to solve it.

That's so horrible, what did the father actually do? Seriously, I would be fuming if they tried to pay me off if it was my child. That justice system is messed up to the fullest.

I had heard about what happened in December and now this.. wow the government there is really not doing his job.. This is horrible to happen, and in our days.. India's economy is growing, they are getting more importance in the world than before, but still so under-developed..

That's so horrible, what did the father actually do? Seriously, I would be fuming if they tried to pay me off if it was my child. That justice system is messed up to the fullest.

The sad thing is, bribing is fairly common - not only in India but many other developing countries. Sad how little the police considered it to be worth though (2k rupees).

This is obviously a really sickening and tragic case - not sure what people want the government to do as such though. It isn't like they are advertising it - although the bribes don't help.

It sickens me to think that stuff like this is happening all around us, not just in LEDCs... What drives people to do stuff like this is beyond me.
