Anyone else puzzled by the "Expires 08/2003" message?

It's meant to show that the restaurant is bad and all the food is well over date, thus the next furni line to be released is virus because of the restaurant failing a ''health inspection''.

Seems like a waste to use a badge to have this "storyline" move along. I think it would've been better if they'd made a little salad furni item and then given one to everyone like this, and had it gone bad or something. It would've made the campaign more interactive and understandable to some of the less observant players.
