I remember reading that in college (or something very, very similar) - but yes, a very emotional piece.

A lot of what he said was far too fast but that was very moving and was very sweet!

Yes, he talked too fast but you could see the love for her that he had and still has. And also what he had been through and that's what you want from poetry. Emotion, love for a person, your experience of life. If a poem has touched hearts or has made the reader feel what you feel, then you have written/acted out a successful poem.
