Home invasion attempt stopped by woman with a shotgun

Carla told us her dog woke her up when he started barking. She looked outside and saw a man in her backyard, another waiting by a car.

Carla wasted no time. Wearing her nightgown, she went outside and fired once toward the ground. Carla says, it was just to scare them off. It worked. The two suspects ran back to a white sedan and drove off.

Carla says she heard one of them screaming, "Crazy ***** has a gun!!"

This all happened around three this morning. Detectives say two male hispanics broke into a home on the 10500 block of Blythe Ave. in Cheviot Hills. The burglars got inside the home through the garage. They were able to steal several items while the homeowners slept through it all.

The men hit a second home about 40 yards away on the 2400 block of Patricia Ave. That's when their luck ran out. As they tried to gain access to the home, 59-year-old Carla came out with her shotgun.

She says, "You have to at some point in time, take responsibility for your own safety and that's all I was doing."
You won't ever hear a story like this - and there are thousands every year - of law abiding gun owners protecting themselves, their families and their property from pondlife on the BBC or any British media for that matter. So that's why i'm going to post more of these to balance it out. The only narrative you'll be fed is the odd wacko (usually on drugs) gets a gun and goes on a killing rampage - something that isn't common although listening to the BBC you'd think it was.

Well done to the lady. In this country she'd be expected to hide behind her pillow and wait for our Police to arrive half an hour, by which time she'd probably have been battered to death and even if caught - the vile scum would probably only get a few years in prison by which time they'd be out again in a few years doing exactly the same thing as before.

    Thoughts?

I suppose I could say the same for all the stories on the other side of the spectrum and how anyone would want guns to be legal

For example, a few days back in the UK, a 82 year old men shot dead two women and some dogs...

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...m-9153662.html

Anyways, America and the UK are different places - it would be pretty crazy to make firearms illegal in the US (Since simply nobody would hand them in), so I can understand your point of view for your own country But it would be equally crazy to make firearms legal in the UK, heck, every time our police shoot down someone there has to be an inquiry into it that lasts for months to decide whether the police was right or not.

I agree, making guns legal in the UK doesn't make as much as much sense as them being legal here. Our crime rates are higher than yours (naturally), although I will point out that cities like Detroit, Chicago, and NY all have extremely strict gun control laws, and their crime rates are some of the worst in America so the idea that gettigr id of guns wills too crime is simply asinine (for america at least)

the stupidity of a few should not spoil things for all law abiding gun owners

Compared to the amount of times that guns are used to defend homes, people, etc I'm sure it is a few.

And yes, agreed but how are we going to go about that? Laws only work for those who are willing to obey them, mentally deranged people who want to go shoot up a school, hospital, or other place with lots of potential victims are going to get guns no matter what.

Firearms are legal so it's fine. Also contrary to popular belief you are allowed to protect your home in the exact same way she did. If she shot someone, the same punishment would apply to if someone in the UK did the same thing. Of course, different states have different laws but quite often the same thing happens in both countries. Section 76 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 provides for this.
