I dont think theres a particular reason that its set like that. If forum management want to change it then they can.

I've left, but I still visit sometimes!
There's no real need for people to reply to the thread, should they wish to go ahead with the sale PM is the best route to deal with it.
Having replies enabled just opens the ability to hijacking, undercutting etc.
I have no idea why it is liek that, it just always has been but I think things like that are generally better discussed over PM and stuff?
There used to be a good reason in one of the stickied threads but I can't remember what it is.
