Default Wicked the Musical - Movie Adaptation Confirmed!

After the success of Disney's Into the Woods movie, another Broadway-based fantasy musical is on the horizon. In an interview with Film Divider, Into the Woods producer Mark Platt announced today that a film adaptation of the fan-favorite Broadway show Wicked is finally coming together with the goal of a 2016 release.

Platt said the following to Film Divider:

[A 2016 release date] is the goal, but I don’t know whether we’ll make that goal or not. We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high. We’re going to scrutinise our work on the screenplay and our prep on the movie, and when we feel like it’s ready, okay. We’re not going to shoot a release date is what I’m saying. It’s in the works, it’s not in a rush. It took 27 years to make Into the Woods into a film from its original stage production, and 30 years with Les Mis. Some things take time for a reason.

Platt, who also produced the original Broadway production of Wicked, additionally confirmed the screenwriter and director of the project. Winnie Holzman, writer for television shows like My So-Called Life and Huge, is currently writing the screenplay. Director Stephen Daldry of Billy Elliot, The Reader, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is set to take the helm of the project. No cast members have been announced yet.

Wicked made its Broadway debut in 2003 with a cast including Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel. Iit went on to become the 11th longest-running show in Broadway history, and is still running to this day. It is also known as as one of the top-grossing Broadway shows of all time. It's really no wonder that it's getting a movie adaptation.

As if 2016 wasn't already big enough, Wicked could definitely make it even bigger. If and when the film is released, look for Wicked to defy gravity at the box office.

Wicked the musical is getting a film adaptation!

I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this, I don't think it will work out but I'm always proved wrong when it comes to adaptations as they are normally super! It has the same Producer as Into the Woods which is good because it will have a fantastic cast but I don't think this one should have a very famous cast, at least not as famous as the Into the Woods one.

Some rumours for cast I've seen already include:

    Idina Menzel
    Harry Styles
    Lea Michele
    Barbara Streisand

I am fairly confident that none of those will happen lol.

If you're a fan, what do you think?

It was confirmed ages ago that they were working on a movie! I'm super excited about a film but would appreciate a recording of the stage version more (like Les Mis's 25th)
Scared that they're going to romanticise it too much and stray away from the original message though

    Dream cast:
    Elphaba - Lea Michele
    Glinda - Megan Hilty
    Fiyero - Aaron Tveit
Nessarose - Anna Kendrick (amazing as Cinderella in Into the Woods)
    The Wizard - Jim Broadbent
Madame Morrible - Barbara Streisand/Idina Menzel (have to get her in there somewhere)
    Boq - Jonathan Groff/Darren Criss

I'm happy with anything as long as they actually get some Broadway vets and don't sacrifice vocal ability for A-Listers (like with Les Mis)

Lea Michele is the most realistic option, Idina Menzel wants her and she has the perfect vocal range for Elphaba

Yes there is certainly a better Elphaba out there but none as high profile as Lea, she already has a built in audience

They are soooo going to romanticise it! I agree with all of your casting except for Elphaba and Morrible. Although Lea is probably the obvious choice and I think she's fantastic, I would just hate to see her in it. I love your ideas for Nessarose and Boq, didn't even think of those but that actually got me excited lmao and I'm not even excited for this film!
