Queen spends 89th birthday celebrating with Royal family at Windsor Castle

The Queen is having a relaxing week at Windsor as she enters her 90th year on Tuesday

The Queen will spend her 89th birthday on Tuesday celebrating quietly with members of the Royal family at Windsor Castle as she takes a rare week off from official engagements. Her Majesty will still go through her daily quota of government red boxes, as she does every day except Christmas Day, but will otherwise be able to relax with the Duke of Edinburgh as she enters her 90th year.

The Prince of Wales, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex have also kept their diaries free, suggesting they may join her for a birthday celebration at some point during the day. She could even receive a visit from her great-grandson, Prince George, if the Duchess of Cambridge is feeling well enough to make the trip, or of the Duke of Cambridge has a day off from his air ambulance pilot training.

The Queen normally spends weekdays at Buckingham Palace during working periods of the year, but has decided to stay at Windsor, which she prefers, where she will personally open a selection of birthday cards sent to her from around the world.

Like the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen dislikes the idea of anyone “making a fuss” over her birthday, and any family celebration is likely to be a low-key affair. It is the fourth successive year that the Queen has celebrated her birthday privately at Windsor, though two of her previous three birthdays were on a weekend.

Her 85th birthday fell on Maundy Thursday, when Her Majesty gave out Maundy money at a service in Westminster Abbey, and on her 80th birthday she went on a walkabout in Windsor to greet crowds who had gathered the celebrate the milestone. The Queen will be back in action on Saturday, when she attends a service at Westminster Abbey to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign in the First World War.

A 41-gun salute will be fired by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery from Green Park in central London at midday to mark the occasion.

The Queen’s official birthday is marked by Trooping the Colour in June.

She's currently the world's oldest reigning monarch, and second longest currently reigning monarch behind King Rama IX of Thailand.

9 September 2015 (at age 89 years, 141 days), she would surpass Queen-Empress Victoria as the longest-reigning British monarch, and the longest-reigning female monarch in world history.

23 May 2016 (at age 90 years, 33 days), she would surpass the claimed reign of James Francis Edward Stuart (the "Old Pretender").

6 February 2022 (at age 95 years, 291 days), she would celebrate her Platnium Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne.

27 May 2024 (at age 98 years, 36 days), she would surpass King Louis XIV of France as the longest reigning monarch of a major country in European history.

17 October 2034 (at age 108 years, 179 days), she could surpass King Sobhuza II of Swaziland as the longest reigning monarch in world history, depending on whether and when the reign of King Rama IX of Thailand had ended.

Would be good too if the Royal baby is born within the next 24 hours.

Happy birthday! I find it quite remarkable how Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh manage to stay so on top of things and active at their ages. Things like this just fill me with joy and make me feel proud to be English.

Meh, Happy Birthday. Still not at all pleased that as Head of State she doesn't put the time or effort to go to important events in other countries even when it would be a short less-than-an-hour-flight. She's great but she's not the best Head of State any more. Not bothering to go to the funeral of a relative or have anyone in her place was appalling. It's no wonder she's called "that ratty woman" in countries like Belgium. She was liked there, until for reasons unknown can't be bothered to visit. She's certainly not as active as she once was.

I do understand though, I was taken aback that during Queen Margrethe II of Denmark's birthday celebrations the other week, which most European royalty attended even the non-reigning houses, the House of Windsor couldn't find one representative to send. I'm sure with that much advance notice, they could have found somebody to send even if it was someone less senior like Prince Michael, Princess Alexandra or the Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

I do understand though, I was taken aback that during Queen Margrethe II of Denmark's birthday celebrations the other week, which most European royalty attended even the non-reigning houses, the House of Windsor couldn't find one representative to send. I'm sure with that much advance notice, they could have found somebody to send even if it was someone less senior like Prince Michael, Princess Alexandra or the Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

If it's tradition it is killing ties with other countries (some of which are related). I wasn't too bothered with her not being able to go to Canada, Australia and other countries in the Commonwealth, but it was ridiculous she nor anyone representing her seems to be going to what should be humble and supportive events like birthdays or funerals. It is a bit ridiculous now.
